Meet Romain Gaillard of The Detox Market in West Hollywood, Santa Monica, and Century City

Today we’d like to introduce you to Romain Gaillard.

Romain, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was raised in Paris, and my parents were early adopters of the green living movement after living in San Francisco in the late ‘70s. Growing up organic came full circle when my close friend’s battle with breast cancer opened my eyes to the need in the beauty industry for healthier self-care and wellness options. Everyone was talking about processed food and how you need to eat organic, but no one cared about what they were putting on their skin. Even I was not immediately convinced—after all, cosmetics in Paris are sold in pharmacies by people wearing white lab coats.

I took a leap of faith to ditch my career in tech and pioneer the green beauty movement. In 2010 I opened a pop-up shop on Abbot Kinney aimed at educating the community about the benefits of green beauty while also exposing consumers to hard-to-find, eco-friendly brands. After the positive response and several more pop-ups, I opened the West Hollywood flagship in 2011, and eventually two more in LA, three in Toronto, and recently a flagship in NYC.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I opened our first pop-up on a shoestring budget when green beauty practically had a negative connotation. We weren’t just ahead of the natural beauty trend—we didn’t know there was going to be one. It really was a passion project, something I believed in wholeheartedly. In the beginning, it was me with my family figuring out how to ring up products and serving juice.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about The Detox Market – what should we know?
The Detox Market has been curating the best of green beauty since 2010. We are committed to being the leading green beauty resource, whether someone already believes in the power of pure products, or they are new to green beauty and want to learn more. As one of the very first retailers in this space, we have built an engaged community that is intelligent, discerning, and curious. We also don’t rely on scare tactics—we focus on the incredible ingredients in our products and the amazing stories of the brand founders.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I wanted to be a designer or a chef. I was spending a lot of my time drawing things and working on new ideas, as well as cooking. I always had a special connection to ingredients—France is a wonderful place for that. Shopping in markets is a part of everyone’s life.
