Today we’d like to introduce you to Roger Burnley.
Roger, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I began in the entertainment industry, first as a singer, model, and actor. After many years of performing I discovered I was beginning to experience various vocal problems. I would lose my voice after a show and got quite frightened that I would also begin to lose my career, because I could not do a show without not being able to talk the next day. I decided I seriously needed to address this issue, so I sought help from many different vocal coaches. I did receive help and understanding from some, but I was not making the progress I wanted and desperately needed. Then I finally found a coach who pinpointed my problem and with that newfound freedom of not losing my voice or getting hoarse, I became obsessed with figuring out even more so that I could help others.
By happenstance I came upon a seminar being given by Dr. David Alessi, an ear, nose, and throat doctor in Beverly Hills. I had an opportunity to speak with him after the seminar and he was quite impressed with what I already knew about developing the voice and maintaining its health. His reason for doing the seminar came out his frustration with so many of his patients, many of whom were prominent singers and actors, continually experiencing vocal problems and putting their careers at stake. He said that he would send me some of his patients who had either had vocal surgery or other problems, and needed rehabilitation or these problems would come back. With each patient, he would send an explanation of their condition in medical jargon I did not understand, so I had to spend hours at the library trying to understand all of this. This went on for a few years, and it was the best education I could possibly have received.
During this time, I continued working with a vocal coach and he saw both my improvement and my ever-growing knowledge of the voice and its physiology, and he suggested that I should start coaching myself. Up until this point I was performing and learning, but had never considered becoming a coach. I bit the bullet and accepted my first client. To my amazement, I discovered that I had developed an uncanny ability to almost look inside the bodies of my clients and figure out their problems, and began to see results quickly. I became so confident that I started advertising guaranteed results with the very first session. I had learned that anyone could learn to sing and do it well, with the right training, guidance, and motivation.
Over the years, my experience in other areas of entertainment led me to branch out into working with the whole person, meaning I wanted them to not only develop as singers and performers, but as confident and self-assured people as well. I developed several online programs, including, “Singing Made Simple”, “Performance Made Simple”, “Singing Styles Made Simple”, and “The Complete Artist,” to that end. My newest program, which is still in the works, is “Overcoming Everything: A self-guide to empowerment”
There is nothing more gratifying and personally fulfilling for me than to witness the emergence of great singers, performers, and ultimately, people.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The struggles I had were with my own insecurities, because of the initial difficulties with my voice. I erroneously doubted my abilities because I did not enter this arena in the typically or traditional way with education. I came to find that my life experience became far more valuable than any training I could have received.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Roger Burnley Voice Studio – what should we know?
I specialize in vocal repair and rehabilitation. I have a unique ability to work with singers, actors, and speakers on all levels. There is no difference for me between working with complete beginners or seasoned professionals. I am extremely proud of the consistent results I receive and have built a stellar reputation. I also give back constantly by offering free content and vocal tips on my YouTube channel, Roger Burnley Voice Studio. The comments and thanks I receive from all over the world keep me motivated to do even more.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I have many mentors, including vocal coach Seth Riggs, and ENT doctor Dr. David Alessi. I would also say that some of my early successes with clients such as Brandy, Macy Gray, and Adam Yauch of the Beastie Boys, as well as countless contestants on singing shows such as “The Voice,” and “American Idol,” have bolstered both my confidence and my career.
