Today we’d like to introduce you to Robyn Morgan.
Robyn, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I knew at a very early age that I loved fashion and dressing up. My grandmother and I would go shopping at Marshall Field’s in Chicago and to lunch at Field’s historical Restaurant The Walnut Room every weekend. I collected European fashion magazines very early on and religiously watched House of Style hosted by Cindy Crawford and Fashion Television with Jeanne Beker.
At the age of 13, I reached out to Seventeen magazine to inquire about the title of the person who dressed the models. Seventeen replied with an extensive overview of the roles within the fashion industry and what it took to acquire those positions. My interest in collecting European fashion magazines reflected in my eclectic style at a young age. I began my journey assisting stylists to gain experience while styling photo shoots to build a portfolio to showcase my work. Quickly after, I landed my first national commercial as a lead stylist for Coca-Cola and Lugz boots.
From there, I obtained an agent at Stewart Talent which was run by Elite model management. I went on to style major Ad Campaigns, Fashion editorials, and commercials as well as working freelance on several episodes of the Oprah show styling makeover segments.
Once I reached a certain level of success in Chicago, I decided to move to Los Angeles to pursue a career in TV and film. Shortly after working on a few projects, I realized that wardrobe for TV and film was not my passion. My stints of working as a Personal Stylist in retail helped me to realize that my passion was in Personal Styling and Image Consulting for individuals.
Building a clientele through working in retail and through word-of-mouth has built my business to where it is today. My main focus has been on expanding my clientele and branding my business.
My client base caters to a luxury, fashionable, exclusive and or family-oriented community. Age 35 to 65, Executive level business professionals as well as Upwardly mobile professionals in the entertainment and media industry.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Starting out as a stylist was not easy. It took a great deal of diligence, determination and networking to get my foot in the door. The most challenging time for me was when I decided to move to Los Angeles as a single mother to pursue a career doing wardrobe for film and TV. Moving to a city and industry that I was not familiar with was extremely difficult. The industry is a very tight-knit community when it comes to giving new talent opportunities. Production teams have their favorites they’ve been working with for years and seem hesitant to try something new.
It took years to get opportunities working on TV and film due to the difficulties of being able to work on projects without being in the union. Anyone who has ever worked freelance knows the importance of budgeting due to not knowing when your next gig will be.
