Meet Robin Johnson of Leroy’s Granddaughter

Today we’d like to introduce you to Robin Johnson.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’ve had a passion for telling stories my entire life. I’m the girl who played with her dolls too long, coming up with elaborate dramatic and romantic stories for them, recreating every movie I saw but adding the endings I really wanted. In 7th grade I had an incredible English teacher who told me I should look into a career as a storyteller and it changed my life. Knowing someone believed in my writing and finding out my deep interest in creating stories was actually a career possibility was everything. Today, I am an actor and filmmaker creating diverse stories in LA.

Has it been a smooth road?
I grew up in South LA with parents who worked all day and night to keep us afloat. Thankfully, my parents were creatives and even though we didn’t have much, through art, they made me believe I had the whole world at my fingertips. I believe growing up with little gave me the ability to learn how to create something from nothing. To fully use my imagination, creativity, and few resources to create grand worlds and interesting stories. Now, as an independent filmmaker, the struggle has been finding the funding to create the stories that come to me. For a long time I wore most of the hats: writer, producer, director, actor and editor all on the same project, but I have learned how much better it is to build a team who you can trust and lean on to get the story made. I’m grateful to have worked with some really great crews and casts over the years.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Leroy’s Granddaughter – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
My production company is called Leroy’s Granddaughter named after my grandfather, who dreamed of being an actor and filmmaker. I believe his dream passed on to me and with this company, I intend to create and support the making of film work by myself and other artists of color. I want the work produced by Leroy’s Granddaughter to have a strong message that uplifts, strengthens & unites people of color. I am still in the beginning stages with my company, having produced three short films and one music video. I am now focused on producing feature films. I am very proud of my company’s first short film on YouTube about an interracial romance called “Colored Hearts,” which has now reached over 200K views. I hope people continue to watch and be positively affected. I am currently developing the feature film version of “Colored Hearts” and I’m very excited about what’s next company and career wise.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
The diversity of Los Angeles gives me life. I love that I am able to have friends from literally every background, eat any type of food and collaborate with an innumerable amount of creatives. In saying that, I don’t like how sectioned off we still seem to be. How a lot of people, ethnicity wise, still seem to stick to their own part of town. I believe your world only gets better the more you explore and allow yourself to get to know people who don’t look like you, eat what you eat, talk like you talk or live how you live. It’s important to have pride in your own culture but it’s definitely beautiful to learn about others. We’re all here together and we can have better lives by allowing each other in, listening and sharing without prejudice.
