Meet Robert Tseng of Total Health Wellness Clinic in Hacienda Heights

Today we’d like to introduce you to Robert Tseng.

Robert, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
As a little boy living in Taiwan, I thought I had the perfect life. Playing around with my brother and sister every day after school, I never once thought I would even move out of my city. When one day, at 7 years old, my parents had told me I was going to the US. I had two weeks to prepare and we were off to the US. Not knowing where I was going, I just knew that my grandmother was going with us.

I arrived in Hacienda Heights, CA at the summer of 1990. I had finally came with my grandmother and siblings thinking that we were just on vacation. When I got to the US, my grandmother would take me to church every Sunday. I thought to myself, “this transition wasn’t so bad after all.” Until I started school. Within the first week of school, I was bullied and called names such as “egg head” because I had a bigger head. I would cry home to my grandmother about these bullies but my grandmother always taught me to respect and honor those even if they teased us. Because this new opportunity in life that my parents gave me was far beyond bullying. It was about my parents providing us with good education to become something. So I ignored the bullies and studied hard knowing one day I want to make my parents proud.

After graduating from Los Altos High School, I decided to attend Mt. San Antonio College and Fullerton Junior College to save some money so that I can transfer to UCI, my dream school. Studying hard, I was accepted to UCI few years after. During my time at UCI, I joined a softball team to meet more people. One day at softball practice, I over swung and that changed everything. My lower back was in excruciating pain where I couldn’t stand. I was taking pain killers and seeing acupuncturist weekly but nothing was working. One day, my friend introduced me to a Chiropractic college called Los Angeles College of Chiropractic, currently called Southern California University of Health Sciences (SCUHS). I went into their student health center and was adjusted by a Chiropractor. The improvement I made after one visit was shocking. After a total of 4 visits, my back pain was completely healed. I went back to playing softball again and was later awarded team captain in my softball team! I knew at that point I wanted to be a Chiropractor. I was accepted to SCUHS and graduated in 2008. In December of 2008, I began as an associate Chiropractic Doctor with Dr. Tzerlin Prong and Dr. Chiang Wang as my mentor in Rowland Heights, CA. After learning and working for couple years, I began to accumulate enough patients to go out on my own. This is when, on May 5th, 2013, I opened and founded Total Health Wellness Clinic in Hacienda Heights where I grew up. Now the clinic is my pride and the local favorite place in this town.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Starting up my own practice with little money to live was one of my biggest obstacles I had to face in life. With over $100,000 of students loans, $20,000 in my savings, and 3 kids and a wife to feed, I began to ask for help. I went back to Taiwan in Summer of 2013 and essentially begged all my family members and my in laws to support me so I can raise enough money to buy majority of medical equipment along with renovation to the clinic.

When I finally raised enough, I thought things would turn around but then more struggles hit me.

Although I had transferred majority of my patients from my previous clinic, I was barely paying off my overhead. I thought by having a practice, patients would walk into my door but that was quite the contrary. In the first 4 months since grand opening, I had 1 new patient. Many of transferred patients began to end their sessions due to their improvements. I was working 12 hours in the clinic seeing my patients, finalizing paperwork, and figuring out my patient flow but the problem was, no one still knew about my clinic. This is when I realized I had to change up my game plan or I was going nowhere. I began to cut down on some time in the clinic to market to promote my practice instead. Then everything began to change.

Please tell us about Total Health Wellness Clinic.
Total Health Wellness Clinic is a private Chiropractic clinic. We have two Chiropractors, Dr. Chris Aoyama and Dr. Robert Tseng, and an assistant Annie. We are a Chiropractic clinic that take care of any neuromusculoskeletal dysfunction but we specialize in personal injury care such as motor vehicle accidents and slip-and-falls. We are most proud of our treatment towards patients. We see patients as if they are our family members. We strive to take that extra step forward to get to know the patient. We want to know more than just their symptoms to find the solutions to their pain. Patients will feel that we care about them outside the clinic as much as when they are inside the clinic. This is what separates Total Health Wellness Clinic from others and we are very proud we can establish that.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I had to start over, I would rent a bigger space (right now only 920 sq. ft.) because it would set me up with a bigger possibility of hiring more staff and putting more equipment in order to serve more. I believe that bring more staff into my practice would make all the difference because of our teamwork is to make each and every patient feel at ease coming to a clinic setting.
