Today we’d like to introduce you to Rico Laurie.
Hi Rico, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started making custom t-shirts in 2003. While I continued to make custom shirts. I took a job at MTV as planning and design assistant, which led me to a position in television production. I ended up co-developing and producing the reality TV show “Baldwin Hills”, which was BET’s most watched TV series at the time. I fell in love with the process of writing and producing reality-docu series television series.
In 2011, I tragically loss my four-year-old son, Niko. It set me back. I knew that I wanted to keep his legacy alive by doing something that he would be proud of, so I decided a few months after going through the worst thing a parent could endure was to get back to my passion of designing graphic tees and becoming a fashion designer. I started taking sewing classes and studying the history of fashion. In 2012, I developed my first cut and sew line of garments, which included hoodie, sweaters, button up shirts, tote bags, and t-shirts. Since then, I have developed and created multiple brands. The latest brand I created, Darby & Rogers is a premium fashion label that features high quality construction and some of the best fabrics the world has to offer. I promised myself after losing my son, that I would focus on following my heart and passion. Fashion is that passion. The Darby & Rogers brand is influenced by my experiences growing up in the City of Inglewood and the greater Los Angeles area, as well as my nostalgia for fashion of the 80’s, 90’s and the fast fashion of today’s era.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been a smooth road at all, but the man above gives his strongest soldiers the hardest battles. In the last ten years, I’ve had to bury a son, my sister lost her battle with Sickle Cell. But I am highly driven by those losses and motivated to be the best me that I can be. The fashion industry has risks and challenges, but with what I’ve seen in my life, I’m highly inspired to leap over any obstacles thrown my way.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in creating good things. I’m known for my creation of logos, graphic art, and making graphic tees. Overall, I’m known as a Creative Director. I’m most proud of the successes that I’ve had in the film and television world, but most recently proud of the brands that I’ve created and giving back to others in need through those brands. I have donated to communities in need through the sales generated from the products that I sell. As a creator, I’m constantly looking to learn from others, I’m open-minded. I think something that stands out or sets me apart from others is my empathy for others who are less fortunate. I seek to help others in need.
What does success mean to you?
I define success by starting something, creating a plan, setting goals, and completing what you started. If you never start or try then you have failed.
