Today we’d like to introduce you to Rich Freeman.
Rich, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My story is like a book that desperately needs to be converted into a movie. Fashion has always been second nature to me, and I always loved making my own T-shirts that had sayings that I came up with. It wasn’t until 2012 where I actually stumbled upon the name of my brand from a song I was in the process of recording. “F*ck An Ordinary Life!”
I screamed at the top of my lungs four times in a row and that’s when it dawned on me that I had something worth pushing. Being that art was something I was talented at, I began to obsessively draw FAOL® every day until I came across what is now my trademarked brand. That same obsession and work ethic have gotten me to where I am today; customers in 20+ states and 2 countries. I’ve built a following based on the idea that anything in this world is attainable, it doesn’t matter what it is.
Congrats on building such a geographically diverse client base. Let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Smooth is definitely an understatement. This road to success comes with a lot of gravel, but it’s mainly up to you to turn gravel into cement. Being that my dreams are BIG, meaning, the idea of being a multi-talented and well-known Rapper with a clothing brand that hits nationally and internationally is crazy right?
Making a staple for the city you grew up in, giving people authentically and original art; regardless of what form it’s in. Yeah, definitely a few challenges will be faced because the obstacle is getting everybody to see the same vision you have while not being afraid to hear what they think. When you know you got something good, the obstacle then becomes keeping the mentality of “I got this,” regardless of what’s happening.
Please tell us more about the brand. What else should we know?
FAOL® is a high-quality streetwear and skate brand set out to push impactful messages through the garments selected. Let me start by saying this, my name is $MASH, THA HOMIE, a rapper and producer from Los Angeles, CA who is mainly gifted in all aspects of ART. My specialties are being able to express myself artistically through different mediums (e.g. film, music, fashion, art).
I’m mainly the guy who is known to “do it all” and to do it “consistently” with “progression.” What I am most proud of as an entrepreneur and entertainer is the fact that people that consume my work actually enjoy it. The little wins make up for the big victory.
When I get that DM on Instagram about how much someone loves the brand and what it stands for is the proudest moment yet because now it’s hitting home for people. The key characteristic that sets myself apart from others is the “I DON’T CARE, I’M GOING TO MAKE IT HAPPEN,” mind state that I have every day. Which is a statement that can be used in multiple ways. But it’s true when you trust your ideas, you stop caring if people will like what you do because you’ve developed a mind state that they will like it regardless and if they don’t, it wasn’t made for them.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Being a kid comes with too many favorite memories. I mostly enjoyed having to watch Keenan & Kel on Nickelodeon or cartoons on WB 7 at 7 am.
