Today we’d like to introduce you to Rica Dee.
Rica, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My journey with Vth. Skin began randomly, yet passionately. As a makeup artist who works on set for at least 12 hrs a day, my lips would constantly get dry and of course, we all lose our chapsticks at work or in the car like they’ve grown legs and ran from us. Having a license in skincare, I figured I need to make something that was just for my lips that was valuable to me and I wouldn’t just leave it anywhere. As I made one for myself, I had just enough to make another small pot of lip balm to take with me on set to use on the talent (actors). Little did I know, an actor by the name of Antoine Perry loved it enough to spread the word to the crew about his thoughts on the balm. His beautiful words of encouragement lead me to believe I needed to market this little kitchen idea and share it with the world.
What makes this balm so special you ask? Unlike other lip balms and chapsticks, my lip balm actually penetrates the lips to last longer and hold moisture. We have five layers of skin, and no product penetrates the 5th layer. Hence my Vth. Skin that will protect and heal like the 5th layer. After months of only selling lip balms, I was questioned about when I’d create different products. So far, I now have massage healing salve and edible lube. YES, EDIBLE LUBE. The lube is a multipurpose product which acts as a moisturizer and soothes eczema anywhere on the body. It has been over a year, and I’m thankful to have so many supporters of my products. I hope you all will love them as well. You can find them on www.vthskin.com.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The road hasn’t been a smooth one. Being a single mom with little to no money, who is constantly pulled in every direction, trying to start a business had lead me to depression at one point. I gave up my passion of painting, creating products, and became hopeless. So many of life’s obstacles threw themselves at me as if to tell me I wasn’t worthy of starting a business. In the midst of my depression, my daughter had a school project to show her class what she wanted to be when she’s older. She chose a makeup artist. I broke into tears and snapped out of feeling sorry for myself. I knew I had to keep going because my daughter was looking up to me. My kids are the reason I’m still here today and why I put love into my products.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Vth. Skin – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
Vth. Skin specializes in healing the skin. My products keep you moisturized WITHOUT the use of chemicals. I only use natural ingredients from plants. What sets Vth. Skin apart is I truly love what I do and studied my products on myself instead of going to a lab.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
My plans for the future would be to have a brick and mortar in each city and hopefully outside of the US. The newest products I’m working on will be guided towards what men want and need. In the midst of working in LA, I became part of an entrepreneurial group by the name of Blaque & Co. who form an array of partnerships with Black people and other minorities. One of my many plans would be to continue the skincare journey by passing down my knowledge to other minorities and inspiring future generations that we can break barriers beyond our skin color.
