Thanks for sharing your story with us Reina. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Good Mexican Girl™ began in 2011 on National Cookie Day – December 4, which is also the day of Changó. I didn’t plan it this way. This was the day I set up my first popup with the Caracol Marketplace for holiday sale.
The concept for the brand is actually from a solo performance I have called Whipped! The character I created is Virginia Buenaventura who very much believes in the value of being a “good Mexican girl” which for her is domestic, house proud, and great in the kitchen.
The baking I have done since I was teenager. During the holidays, I’d gift cookie boxes to friends and my mom’s co-workers. At their encouragement, I started baking as my side hustle from teaching college students. Now I set up every week at the California Market Center farmer’s market on 9th & Main on Wednesdays from 9 am- 2pm, or find me at local pop-up shops on weekends at different venues.
Healing Queen was established two years later. As a wellness practitioner, I studied the modalities of cranial sacral unwinding and polarity therapy. The energy of this work crosses-over to the baking, as I do it with mindfulness and love. My studio is Pasadena at Kosha Wellness Center.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Overall, it has been smooth as I share pop-ups with my partner. I would say the challenges have taught me to refine my purpose & focus. Ultimately, it’s about trusting that you are on the right path.
Please tell us about Good Mexican Girl & Healing Queen.
Good Mexican Girl™ is an artisans bakery that celebrates cultura through vegan and gluten-free desserts. Every anniversary, I come up with a new cookie that ends up being hits like our signature Dulce de Leche Cookie which are part of our alfajores. The other popular anniversary cookie is a vegan Rosewater Pistachio. It all started with the Mexican wedding cookie which I call “Throw me a wedding shower”. During Day of the Dead & El Día de Los Reyes, I always bake vegan or gluten-free preparations of these Mexican treats. Locally vegan is the top seller and online orders are the gluten-free ones.
Healing Queen, I’m most proud of having a successful practice that I do on a full-time basis. Last year, after reflecting on my practice and my offerings, I came up with the Love Limpias. These are energetic cleanses of the heart space to welcome and receive love or to release what’s no longer in alignment with your true self. These have such a blessing to witness a client’s shift and transformation.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
First, I wouldn’t have waited so long to take the plunge of being an entrepreneur living my dream. With that being said, I honor the journey I did have to get where I am because I have a deeper appreciation for it all.
Secondly, not be anxious and remember to be present in what I do and where I am at. People vibe energy. If you are open and present they’ll be more apt to engage with you and support your hustle.
Thirdly, expectations are distractions. Deepak Chopra said that the known imprisons you in your past and does not allow you to be open to unfolding of what’s to come. You can only see or experience the miracles if you are in the now.
