Meet Rehya Stevens singer songwriter from Encino

Today we’d like to introduce you to singer-songwriter, Rehya Stevens.

Rehya, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I grew up in a musical family. My dad is a professional composer/arranger/ keyboardist, so our home was a rehearsal space, recording studio, couch crashing hub for musicians and creatives of various trades. Creativity was a way of life, and artistry was taken seriously.

In epigenetics they say that gene expression can be turned off or on in response to environmental stimuli. Because of the backdrop I was born into, I think my creative genes were lit up and nurtured from an early age. I loved to sing, and was fascinated with songwriting. I wrote my first song when I was 8 years old, and never stopped. I mean, I made terrible records in my bedroom for years before I made decent ones!

I landed my first paid gig when I was 11 years old, and by 18, I’d played all the local bars, nightclubs and festivals in the Sacramento area. In my 20’s, I moved to LA to attend The Musician’s Institute, and completed the K.I.T. (Keyboard Institute of Technology) program. While in school, I made my first EP, and started doing session and live work around town. I met some phenomenal producers, musicians and composers – and collaborated with anyone who was in town, and up for the adventure. As my catalogue grew, I learned the ropes of the music industry, and the dynamics of this city, which was a priceless education!

Eventually, I started landing placements in ads, t.v. shows and movies. It wasn’t an intentional route at first. I actually wanted to be signed to a big label, making hit records, and touring the world. But the music industry changed so much! Call it blind faith – or foolishness, but I just kept making music that moved me, and that I thought might matter to other people – and managed to carve a path from there.

Has it been a smooth road?
It has been a bumpy, winding road, with occasional motion sickness! But I think that’s the case no matter what you choose in life – because life is a winding road for all of us!

Dealing with egos, the politics of the business, and stressful #metoo moments – before there was even a #metoo movement to speak of, is where the road has been rocky and intense. But, I’m wiser and better equipped to navigate the journey as a result. I trust my instincts above all else now. Also, adopting a healthy surrender to the fact that everything happens for a reason is a tremendous time saver. If you hang in there long enough, you’ll discover a blessing behind every “no.”

From an artistic standpoint, for me it’s always blissful to deep dive into making great records. I have an insane work ethic, because I’m compelled by the process. The deeper you go, the more still, quiet and exquisite it gets – just like the ocean. And that’s why I do this. I love the creative journey.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
I’m an Artist/Singer-Songwriter/Studio Rat making music from the heart – for soulful music lovers, film, t.v., and ads.

To date, I’ve had some wonderful placements, most recently with a song called “Jingle Jangle” which is featured in the films; “Noelle” (Disney +), “Black Christmas,” and “Sense, Sensibility & Snowmen” (Hallmark). I’ve been fortunate to have a smattering of placements over the years, but these have been especially fun – as I just released an all-original Christmas album!

But, street cred or no street cred, I’m just a singer/songwriter making the best music I can, with as much honesty and integrity that I have to offer at this point. I hope my songs plant seeds of positive change, and provide a wonderful companion for people of all walks of life.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
LA is FULL of brilliant musicians and artists. For me, being surrounded by this community is vital. If you want to be a music professional, LA is a great place to be. There are plenty of opportunities for anyone who is facile at their craft, and easy to work with. If you’re not at that point yet, LA will whip you into shape, if you let it. Just get your butt here, and hold on for the ride of your professional life! There are so many gifted people to learn from, and plenty of opportunities to share your gift.
