Today we’d like to introduce you to Regina Stallworth.
Regina, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I am a single mom of an 11 year old son and nine month old baby girl. I am part of the first-generation college graduates for my family. I have a BS in Healthcare Administration and MBA from Keller Graduate School of Management. Healthcare is definitely one of passions. Helping people all together is a passion. I am also very passionate about personal hygiene because I believe that where your healthcare starts. It’s all about how well you take care of yourself.
Personal hygiene is something that I have remind my son about every single day. The questions just roll off my tongue, “Did you brush your teeth?’ “Did you take a shower?” “Did wash your face?” “Did you put on deodorant?”. Sometimes the answer is yes and sometimes I’m reminding him. There are times when he can’t locate the products necessary to take care of his personal hygiene. I’m then forced to repurchase the items needed.
With this in mind, I wondered how the homeless and less fortunate are able to take care of their personal hygiene. This was something I thought about for a few weeks. At first, I thought it was something that I would just “get over”. I was completely wrong, it started to haunt me. That’s one thing about your passion, no matter what you do it’s going to keep coming for you. One day, in February 2017, I just decided to get as many hygiene products as I could, make hygiene kits, and go hand them out to the homeless. Then birth Hygiene Clean Inc. We have served several areas across Chicago. We have also partnered with nonprofit organizations to service different areas in Chicago.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
When starting a business there’s never a smooth road. Starting a nonprofit isn’t exempt from this process. One of biggest struggles was raising enough donations in order to be able to fund the mission. This was something that I would stress about, as I wanted to make sure we had enough hygiene kits to service the community. With a little brainstorming, I came up with idea of selling Hygiene Clean T-shirts. The proceeds from the T-shirts would go towards the hygiene kits. This was a huge relief for me. It’s important as business owner to focus on why you started the business, when you have struggles. It will allow you to pivot your mind into the solution and to remain positive throughout the struggle.
Another struggle I had, was the mindset of some people when it comes to the homeless and less fortunate. I would hear comments such as, “They’re criminals” “They’re drug addicts” “Why don’t they just get a job?”. I believe that being judgmental is what keeps us from truly understanding one another. I don’t need to know the story. My job is to meet the need.
Please tell us about the organization.
Hygiene Clean Inc. is a Chicago based nonprofit that provides every day hygiene products to the homeless and less fortunate. We create hygiene kits complete with wash cloth, soap, lotion, deodorant, lotion, toothpaste, and a toothbrush. We go out to the homeless community and out the kits. There are times where we hand out food as well. Our proudest moments are the looks on the faces of those we help.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite childhood memory is our family movie nights. Maybe once a month we would come together and watch a movie. Many times, it would a comedy. Something kid friendly, like “Rush Hour”.
