Today we’d like to introduce you to Rebecca Zung.
Rebecca Zung is one of the Top 1% of divorce attorneys in the nation, having been recognized by U.S. News & World Report as a “Best Lawyer in America”, as “Legal Elite” by Trend Magazine, and recognized by her peers and the judiciary as AV©, preeminent rated in family law, the highest possible rating for an attorney by Martindale Hubbell. She is a sought-after keynote and motivational speaker on Negotiation and Knowing Your Value, as well as the author of the bestselling book Breaking Free: A Step-by-Step Divorce Guide for Achieving Emotional, Physical, and Spiritual Freedom and is a frequent major media contributor.
In her book and keynote presentations, she shares the lessons that she learned in her own transformational journey starting as a college dropout, who married at 19 and had three children by the age of 23, who was divorced by the age of 29, to becoming one of most highly respected and celebrated divorce attorneys in the country, as well as a bestselling author, successful entrepreneur and keynote and motivational speaker.
Her perspectives are in high demand by television and print outlets, as she has been featured in or on Extra TV, Forbes, Huffington Post, Newsweek, Time, Dr. Drew, NPR Talk Radio, Good Day New York and CBS Los Angeles among others. Now, based in Los Angeles, she is continuing to serve the divorcing population through her keynote speeches on negotiation called “Have It Your Way: Successfully Negotiate What You Want in Life and Business” as well as through her top podcast, which is co-hosted with fellow attorney Susan Guthrie, Breaking Free: A Modern Divorce Podcast.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Absolutely not. I went back to law school as a single mom and ended up graduating with honors only because I was deathly afraid of flunking out and having to pay back my student loans on a teacher’s salary. When I went back to law school, there were plenty of naysayers who said that there were already too many lawyers, that they knew people who had graduated from law school and were bagging groceries. As I have ascended up through the ranks to be where I am today, there are still always people who are jealous, who are ready have words of judgment handy, but learning how to keep my own focus and understand that this is about my own journey, and becoming the best version of myself. I hold my own spirit and wholeness in my own hands and then bring that whole self to serve those that I speak to in my speeches and also those in my world.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I am a keynote speaker on the area of negotiation. I come from the perspective of how you and you alone define your value, and that people will think what you tell them to think. That 80% of negotiation happens before you walk into the room. I also wrote a bestselling book on divorce (Breaking Free: A Step by Step Divorce Guide to Achieving Emotional, Physical and Spiritual Freedom) and am still a practicing attorney in Florida (Long, Murphy & Zung). I have a top podcast, Breaking Free: A Modern Divorce Podcast, and we just celebrated 1,100,000 listens and the show has only been on for ten months. Currently, I am completing my second book on negotiation empowerment for women, which will provide eight steps to successfully negotiating anything you want to get in life and in business. I provide some private negotiation coaching also. Finally, through my company Breaking Free Mediation & Coaching, we provide online divorce mediation services, as well as coaching through high conflict and divorce.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My business coach, Kelly Townsend, (Townsend Consulting Group) has been a huge influence on me and I have referred probably 25 people to her over the years. She taught me how to get rid of the unseen barriers I had put up to my own success and didn’t even realize it. She then taught me how to get out of the scarcity mentality and into the abundance vortex. With her by my side, I built the largest divorce practice in southwest Florida, and am now building my brand as the negotiation master speaker and teacher for women.
