Meet Becca and Billy Mohler of Cal Heights Music in Long Beach

Today we’d like to introduce you to Becca and Billy Mohler.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Becca and Billy. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Music has been our life for as long as we can both remember! My husband Billy Mohler is a musician, songwriter and producer. He is a grammy nominated multi-instrumentalist and has played with Dolly Parton, Macy Gray, AWOLNation, The Calling Herbie Hancock, and many more artists! I started my career on the creative side working for record labels doing alternative music marketing. I have also been in a signed band as the bassist and play piano and guitar.

My husband and I started Cal Heights Music almost a year and a half ago when we moved from LA to Long Beach. Our musical background inspired us to open a music school and to share our passion for all things music with our new community. We have three young children and it was important to us that they learn music in a space that is as professional as it is fun! This sentiment was also felt by many of the local parents in our neighborhood and before long our music school was up and going!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Like all new small businesses there are challenges that come up and there are unexpected obstacles. For us the most challenging aspect is taking two artistic and creative minds and focusing on some of the more business and administrative sides of Cal Heights Music. Learning about accounting, payroll, insurance, and those parts of the business has been the hardest part. In contrast the big ideas, creative thoughts, and artistic side of the business has been super fun!

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Cal Heights Music story. Tell us more about the business.
We specialize in being an all ages, all levels music school. We teach everything from piano to vocals to drums and guitar, ukulele, violin, trumpet and much more! We do individual and group lessons. We are proud of having babies as young as a couple of months old to retired adults coming to our school weekly to learn and be immersed in music. We pride ourselves in being a unique one of a kind music school where our space is as inspiring and exciting as the music we teach. We believe a clean, bright, cheerful and inspiring space helps students learn! All our lesson rooms have glass doors as it is important as parents ourselves, that other parents can see into their kid’s lessons. We also always encourage parents to sit in during their children’s lessons. There is nothing to hide and transparency is very important.

We also believe in giving back to our community and we do multiple free recitals during the year where in return we ask students and families to bring in items for donation we have given to Millers Children’s Hospital and most recently the Women’s Shelter of Long Beach. We are also starting a nonprofit side where we hope to offer financial aid for lessons and do free lessons in different areas of Long Beach.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Luck plays a big part. We were lucky to find our current location. The building is absolutely perfect for what we wanted for our music school. It’s in the perfect location! We couldn’t be any luckier to have to the amazing support from our community! We feel very lucky indeed! Lucky to be making music and sharing music with people of all ages on a daily basis. Doesn’t get much better than that!
