Meet Rashaad Charlie Fielding of RCF DNM in Harlem NYC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rashaad Charlie Fielding.

Charlie, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
When I actually look back on things, I started to find the love of designing things as a child. Sitting in the back of my 3rd grade math teachers’ class drawing clothes; wishing I could make them. Fast forward and years later while in high school, I picked up a needle and thread. I use to sew my own patches on my jeans by hand; which would become time-consuming; the outcome was amazing. From that point, I knew I had something special because people began to take notice. I had a couple of orders to sew patches on jeans for people with just a needle and thread. The orders started piling up so I had to do something. I started taking orders to the cleaners and paying for them to get sewed on. Not long after, my sister ordered me a heavy duty sewing machine. I was scared and unsure how to use it at first so I took a few classes to learn fundamentals and the rest was history.

Little by little, I began to expand things I would sew. Started with sewing patches on jeans, moved to sewing patches on dad hats, that transitioned into opening up jeans taking them apart and reconstruction. Once my curiosity grew I soon realized how to make whole garments, so I took a few more classes on basic garments; after that I became an oil machine. Shortly after, I launched my brand, RCF DNM with the support or my Business partner and CEO of Glamourtresses Studios. Business was looking good and Custom made orders increased. Then, I started making full pieces to create my own collection. My first collection consisted of, nine bottoms three different styles, two types of graphic t-shirts, two full zip up hoodies and two belts. The collection was featured in my very first fashion show. Now, working on my second full collection just a few short years later, my business and grown to be a national success despite COVID19 is making effectively running my business a little more difficult.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Obstacles of daily life are the main bumps in the road. Balancing adulting with getting a business off the ground is easier said than done. I’m a one man band not much to any help when it comes to making garments. I also have to get over the hump and focus on production to the buyers.

RCF DNM – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
My business is a clothing brand by the name of RCF DNM. I make garments made-to-order or custom reconstruction pieces. My specialty is bottoms, Jeans & sweat pants. Those are my big hitter money makers. Made by hand is what I’m known for. Nothing is imported from China everything is made out of NYC on a sewing machine. That sets me apart from other brands. I’m proud that I started my business the difficult way. I didn’t start with a screen print T-shirt, I started with makes full garments. Once that element catches up, there will be no stopping me.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
My proudest moment of my career so far was making my first collection and being part of a fashion show. I never would of thought I have a collections coming out to the public from just picking up a needle and thread.
