Rachelle and Ross, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
We launched Coozie Gear because we, along with the vast majority of our customers, prefer to spend our money on the experience of getting outside rather than owning the gear itself. We are outdoor dabblers – we want to try new activities without committing to expensive gear.
The outdoor industry has historically encouraged us to invest in the gear needed to do most outdoor activities. We realized that many of us aren’t interested in owning gear, and instead would simply rather have that gear on-demand, without the hassle and expense of buying, storing, and maintaining the gear.
The more we talked to friends, family, and potential customers we realized that there was no alternative to ownership that excited people. Traditional rental gear is often low-quality, inconvenient, and does not offer a great customer experience. Retail stores have very limited rental options (if any) and encourage customers to own. We created Coozie Gear to offer customers the opportunity to easily and conveniently access premium gear to experience the outdoors, without the need for ownership.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It’s been an incredibly fun ride but launching a new business model doesn’t come without ups and down. Luckily, we’re co-founders who also happen to be married and we work phenomenally well together. Whenever one of us is facing a tough challenge we know we can depend on the other to help out. The advice we’d give to other founders is to believe in your vision, persevere to reach your goals and find amazing people to help you along the way.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Our goal is to make it as easy as possible for customers to experience the outdoors and we are constantly thinking about how we can improve the Coozie Gear experience. We recently launched The Coozie Concierge to help people select and book the perfect camping location, answer questions about camping gear, and plan for the best trip possible.
