Meet R33kz of R33kz Design Group in Pasadena

Today we’d like to introduce you to R33kz.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I became interested in design at a very young age through basketball which was my first love. I used to want the flyest sneakers because they made me feel like I was I a superhero. Being the kid with the flyest kicks on earned your respect, and it was another outlet for me to express myself.

As time went on I started to realize I was interested in the color palettes and textures of the shoes I was wearing and becoming curious as to how they were being designed. In my high school years, I became more curious about putting together an overall outfit and I discovered streetwear and the process of silkscreen and designing my own clothes. In 2005 I lost a very good friend of mine to gun violence and for his funeral, I designed a shirt with his picture on it, it was my very t-shirt design which would then lead me to figuring out how to create my own designs and put them together to create something new. Fast forward to 2008, I had an idea the summer right after I graduated high school to create my own t-shirt brand, but I knew there would be a learning curve I would have to conquer.

In order for me to learn how to create the designs that were in my head, I had to learn how to graphic design. So I then researched what software programs I would need to create these designs and how to go about printing them onto garments. I taught myself graphic design out of necessity to turn my ideas into something physical and real. Learning graphic design opened my creativity up to new possibilities. Once I figured out how my creative process works and how I can use the rules of design and apply those rules to anything I could always figure out ways to create anything that came to mind.

Design is simple, we as designers are supposed to find solutions to problems and we can find the solution using less than we did our job well. All that to say I have used design to create things because I am simply always trying to find a solution to a problem. If I can innovate or find a solution to a problem that helps out one person or a million people, I have done my job as a designer. Those ideas have carried me to where I am at today.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
If it was a smooth road, would it be any fun? Haha, It has not been a smooth path and I wouldn’t want it any other way. Growing up, I used to cry more than any normal human being should cry and I was afraid of many things. Someone once told me struggle builds character and I believe that phrase to be true because it has pushed me out of my comfort zone plenty of times which has allowed me to grow not only personally but also creatively. God doesn’t give you more than you can handle, and if it wasn’t for some of the situations I’ve been through I don’t think I would have what it takes to succeed in not only in business and creating, but in life.

I have learned to embrace that at any moment things can go left and instead of being afraid or figuring out ways to run from a problem, it’s much better to acknowledge the issue and fully step into the problem. Now I get excited when I have to take a risk or things don’t go my way because for me being ready to expect the unexpected forces me to stay ready and on my toes at all times and reminds me that I shouldn’t get too comfortable because things could change at a moments notice.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the R33kz Design Group story. Tell us more about the business.
R33kz Design Group is a branding and design company that specializes in logo and website design as well as brand management. What sets us apart from our competition is that we also have the ability to create more in the realm of fashion. We have the skill set to create line sheets, set up and style photo shoots, provide photography, and creative and legal consulting. Currently, what I am most proud of is how many projects we have helped creatively consult on are now starting to blossom which is enhancing our credibility.

Also, we helped create my own magazine which is online and a physical print publication called Proceed Malizine.

and we are currently working on a new logo design for a new mobile app as well as a new streetwear clothing brand I am working on with a friend.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I don’t really like to call it luck, I like to call it a “no look pass” blessing because everything happens for a reason. I also think that timing is everything and when it’s our time its our time whether it be good or bad. Sometimes those blessings come at the right time, and sometimes they don’t, but they have definitely impacted my life and business always for the better because even when something negative occurs its not a loss its a lesson that I can apply to my business or my life to push me forward.
