Meet Qway Starchild

Today we’d like to introduce you to Qway Starchild.

Qway, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Music has been with me for as long as I can remember. As a child, my mother would clean the house to Smooth Jazz music. It was only natural that I took a liking to it. It was also early on when I discovered Hip-Hop. I have my older brother to thank for that. The first rapper that I ever heard was Nas. I was hooked after that.

I began my actual journey as a rapper at the age of 11, when my step-father woke me up at around 3 A.M. to record some lyrics that he had prepared. Those early morning hours are what sparked the fire in me. The pen and I were one in the same from then on.

As of now, I feel comfortable enough to call myself a true Hip-hop artist. My canvas is the microphone, and the paints are my surroundings. Through sheer passion and hard work, I am able to transform mere thoughts and phrases into captivating stories and clever wordplay.

I am an artist.

Has it been a smooth road?
For art, I believe the road is never smooth. If it were, then I believe everyone would be an artist. Only those who are ready and willing to put in the long hours and endure constant disappointment will make it to see their dreams come to fruition.

As for myself, my struggles are a bit more complicated than staying up late nights to perfect a song. I have struggled with Depression along this musical journey of mine. The constant reminder that I was not okay had bothered me. It often distorted my vision of the successful future that I had mapped out. My mental battles with Depression evolved into a physical war. This war that I speak of comes in the shape of self-inflicted wounds. I used cutting as a coping mechanism until I threw myself into my music. I was determined to heal myself through song. I documented all of my pains and sorrows within my first project titled, The Suicide LP. From that moment on, I’d never cause myself pain again. Music actually saved my life.

Can you give our readers some background on your music?
My business is Hip-Hop music. I am my company. My specialty is “Real Emotions” and the product is excellent. My name itself is special.

Qway Starchild.

Qway is short for Quasar. For those familiar with space, a quasar is defined as one of the brightest objects in space, emitting exceptionally large amounts of energy. I believe that I take on those characteristics.

Starchild is another play on the brightness that I feel that I emit.

What sets me apart from others is my ability to create something out of thin air, at the drop of a dime, that will captivate your spirit and have you reflect on your own personal feelings. I try my best to learn new words every day so that I won’t become a limited artist who recycles the same materials over and over again.

What I am most proud of is the energy that I give in each song that I create. Each song has a different feel to it. But the energy is always there, so that the listener may feel everything that I was trying to convey within that record.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I like the life force that is emitted from the people in my city. The constant battle to not just get by, but get over, has strengthened the people. We are a resilient people who can overcome just about anything.

What I like least about my city is the violence. The battle to succeed or at least the battle to show off the ideas of success, has caused a ripple within the city. If we took the time to understand each other’s plight a bit more, I think we can progress to a safer future.
