Meet Preston O’Connell of Fulcrum Adventures in Venice/ Marina del Rey

Today we’d like to introduce you to Preston O’Connell.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Preston. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Growing up in Venice in the 90s two blocks East of Abbot Kinney, I got to experience and live in Venice before it is what it is now. Growing up around not only gangs and constant drug use but also brilliant creative minds and local world-renowned artists gave me a social education that was very unique. From a young age, I could fit in anywhere with anyone because that’s what Venice was a melting pot of everyone from everywhere. I believe that was the biggest influence for me in choosing the career I have now in team building and outdoor education, to continue to meet new people in interesting fields and continue to grow both socially and professionally.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has been far from a smooth road. I was diagnosed as special needs in 3rd grade and always had trouble with that stigma. I constantly fought and lashed out in all areas of my life. I would get suspended from school pretty frequently starting in about 7th grade. I continued down this path and after 10th grade basically got expelled from the school I was at. At the point I was pretty much done, I was just going to skate and work in construction. Where I’m from not many people made it past Oakwood park and that was totally ok with me, but my family convinced me to apply to a local catholic high school. Much to my surprise, I got in and after repeating an entire year of high school in one summer I got my life on track. I excelled in sports and ended up as the captain of the baseball team my senior year. From there, I started working and got my first job working for the City mentoring and coaching at risk youth and that led me to the job I have today in experiential education.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Fulcrum Adventures story. Tell us more about the business.
Fulcrum Adventures is an outdoor and experiential education company based in Marina del Rey that specializes in high ropes courses and team building both for youth and corporate groups. I am a senior facilitator and specialize in working with youth specifically teaching them leadership and character building skills that will set them up for success later in life.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I’ve always considered myself to be a lucky person. I have a great family, my mom and dad have been together for over 30 years and raised me and my brother in a little bungalow, I have a beautiful wife, and I love my job. However, I’m a firm believer in luck is where preparation meets opportunity. I’ve worked hard to get where I am today and approach each day with a growth mindset ready for new opportunities and challenges. Have I been lucky both personally and professionally? Absolutely! But a lot of that was putting myself in the right place at the right time and being open to whatever and whoever comes my way.
