Today we’d like to introduce you to Pree Mayall.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started off in the 3rd grade and pick up the flute. And as I was learning western classical music, I picked up other instruments – the clarinet, trumpet, and Sax. I was 14 when I fell in love with Indian music, so I decided to learn Indian classical music. I didn’t speak Hindi or Punjabi very well, but I the music background made it easier to pick up. At the same time I started play percussion and picked up an Indian drum, the dhol. At the age of 17 I won the International Dhol Competition in Toronto which led to a lot of notoriety in the Indian Music Scene. I was lucky enough to connect with different major Punjabi artist and eventually joined on multiple tours traveling the world. At the age of 19 I decided to go into music production and at the age of 21 I released my first solo album “Me Myself and Pree”. It was a major accomplishment because I wrote, produced, composed, sang, mixed, and mastered the entire project. By 23 I was solo touring with the album. At the age of 25 I decided to focus primary as a music producer, and have been a part of a ton of different projects. Last year I released the album “DOPE” and am working on different entertainment projects currently.
Has it been a smooth road?
Not at all. I was a full time student in college and was touring at the same time. So my schedules would become increasingly crazy as the years went on.
My family was hit hard by the economic crisis in 2008 which resulted in the family losing a family run restaurant. Money was extremely tight so it was upon me to learn every part of the process in music production (mixing, mastering etc.) because I couldn’t afford hiring anyone.
I learned to speak Punjabi at the age of 17, so there was a large communication gap. Not to mention a large cultural change as well as I submersed myself in the scene.
For the last 5 years I have been heavily involved in the startup world and am an advisor to 3 start ups today. I am also completing my MBA at Pepperdine. So balancing everything is extremely difficult.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Inner Vibe is my music production company. We are a team of 4 people currently. We produce, write, mix, and master all of our own work, so everything stays in house. Though we make musical pieces for commercials, movies, etc., our primary focus is music production for artists. We have recently worked with many mainstream artists. We are extremely proud of the sound we have built and the quality we deliver. We have a very unique sound because of our diverse backgrounds.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Los Angeles is a perfect city for this. You have the ability to work with multiple people who are focused and determined. The network you can build is priceless and the opportunities are endless. My advice: have thick skin and be relentless.
