Today we’d like to introduce you to Portia Jackson.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I got started in digital marketing back in 2013 when I started a podcast for working moms while I was still working as a rocket scientist during the day. I wanted to get my message out to as many people as possible and in the process of doing so, I created a very successful online business. Many of my listeners (other working moms) wanted to learn how to do what I was doing so that naturally led me into becoming a business coach. However, I didn’t fit the typical “business coach” definition because I really loved the strategy and execution of the technical side of business. This inspired me to start a digital marketing agency where I could focus on Facebook ads, messenger bots and sales funnels to help my clients get their message to the people that needed to hear it. Now, that I’m running an agency that is primarily focused on done-for-you services, I can still add my certified coaching skills into the overall strategy but I’m also able to really bring in my technical ability to drive more leads and sales for my customers and that really appeals to inner nerd.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Heck no. If entrepreneurship was a smooth road, everyone would do it. It is definitely NOT for the faint of heart. There have been many disappointments along the way. I went from being completely debt-free to having over $45,000 in debt from working with coaches, buying courses, software and hiring a team. I’ve hired team members that have not delivered but from that, I’ve become a better program manager and recruiter. When I transitioned from coaching to delivering digital marketing services, I had to quickly learn to manage client expectations and be bold enough to say that a $20 a day ad spend on Facebook is not going to help you achieve your $100,000 a month goal. Let’s keep it real. I’ve also had to go back and essentially re-structure my current business so, it wasn’t another job where I was doing everything but an actual business where my income isn’t limited by my time and resources.
Entrepreneurship has been the best personal development I could have signed up for. You start a business thinking it’s all about the revenue and profit for yourself and your customers and it really ends up being about how deep are you really willing to dig into yourself to see your dream manifested. What’s really going to get you through those days when you have the ugly snotty cry, bills are due and you’re feeling all sorts of guilt about the sacrifices you’ve made with your time, money and energy but knowing that what you have to offer your ideal clients is changing their lives and yours. It makes the struggles worth it. I don’t believe anything is a failure unless you refuse to learn from it.

Launchpad Social is a digital marketing agency that specializes in Facebook ads, Facebook messenger bots and sales funnels that generate more leads and sales for our clients. We specialize in service-based businesses such as plastic surgeons, real estate agents, medical professionals and coaches/consultants but we also have a big e-commerce presence as well.
As a former rocket scientist, I focus on simplified and proven strategies and testing, testing, testing until we find the right online marketing mix that works for that particular business. Typically our customers are well-established businesses that are looking to replace their older marketing strategies like mailers with online marketing.
I’m most proud of the fact that we are very selective with who we work with as a company. We treat our clients like family and are truly invested in their success. I’m proud that we deliver results and that is reflected in our growth as a company. Our revenue grows 8x in 2017 and we’re looking to do the same this year.
We’re a boutique agency where our clients get 1:1 attention. They aren’t just another client like some of the bigger advertising agencies. They each get their own account manager and doesn’t feel like you’re working with some massive firm, we really focus on the customer experience.
What were you like growing up?
I was the Type A, overachieving, homecoming queen growing up. I cried if I got an A- because I always wanted to be the best. My parents were really great at getting me involved in lots of different activities and experiences so, I could see what my strengths were and were not. It was very clear that any type of athletic activity would not be my ticket to glory. Although, I am a die-hard college football fan. I excelled in music, pageants, and speech competitions. I worked hard and was motivated by praise and accolades. I’ve always had a great sense of (dry) humor and while I was (and still am) a natural introvert, I didn’t mind going new places and meeting new people.
