Meet Phoebe Dawson, Makeup Artist

Today we’d like to introduce you to Phoebe Dawson.

Phoebe, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I grew up in a small beach town in New Zealand when I was 17, I moved to Australia to go to Makeup School, then at 19, I moved to Los Angeles alone to pursue my dreams and goals as a makeup artist in Hollywood. I have now been working freelance in LA full time for about 7 years and I have worked on some incredible jobs and have been flown all over America and internationally to Jamaica, Haiti, and Mexico to do what I love!
Some of my credits include Vogue Magazine, the cover of Forbes Magazine, The Oscars, The Golden Globes, Miss USA, NBA All-Star Weekend, OWN, Sharknado 3, The Today Show, The Amazing Spiderman Press, Sundance Film Festival, many music videos and celebrities including; Snoop Dogg, Mario Lopez, Shaq, Tonya Harding, David Hasselhoff, GiGi Gorgeous, Jason Biggs, and more!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has never been a smooth road, working in the entertainment industry takes a huge amount of hustle, determination, hard work, long hours, sweat and tears! Especially my first few years freelancing I was still building up regular clientele and doing low rate gigs, taking every gig I could to learn and grow, and it would be very stressful to pay my bills, sometimes, at the end of the month. In the beginning, also you do a lot of crappy jobs and let people walk over you or take advantage of you, etc., it was all a learning experience but there were definitely some rough patches. There were times, I’d cry at the end of the month, praying checks would arrive in time to cover my rent, it always worked out just in the nick of time!! There was also shady people who didn’t pay me after completing the job and we had agreed on the rate and everything, that definitely taught me the hard lessons to always get rates and agreements in writing before the job.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Phoebe Dawson Makeup Artist – what should we know?
I am a freelance makeup artist that works with celebrities and people in the entertainment industry for film, TV, red carpet, music videos, interviews, photo shoots and more.

I specialize in beauty makeup and love creating different beauty looks with really flawless glowing skin. As a person, I am very professional, on time, quiet when I need to be and supportive of my clients, as a makeup artist I also feel like a huge part of our job is being a friend, support system, therapist and confident.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I assisted some incredible makeup artists when I first moved to LA and was able to learn so much from them and get experience on professional sets and around celebrities, etc. Two of the most influential for me were Amy Nadine Clement and Lorena Lopez.

Also, my sister, Chelsea has always been my support system and #1 cheerleader in my life, I am so grateful to have her around! My parents still live in New Zealand and have always been there for me and supportive of everything I do.

I am so grateful for all the other very talented makeup artists and hair stylists in my circle, I value them so much and we all help keep each other busy with referrals and are always there for each other to “talk shop” or give advice.
