Today we’d like to introduce you to Phillip Dane.
Phillip, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
In 1991, I started the Melrose Flea Market at the Fairfax High School. Now it is the Melrose Trading Post (different owners) and from there I created a number of “Support Local” far before anyone knew what that meant. From Peddler on the Roof at the Sunset Gower Studios Rooftop Parking Lot to Dodger Stadium Flea with 500 vendors and 20,000 attendees to Truckit Fest and now Odd Markets. Currently, my wife and I operate Odd Market shows on The Santa Monica Pier, at The Autry, The Bloc and soon opening in Glendale at Central Park.
Our events feature music, local makers selling their wares (pop-up shops), food trucks, kids inflatables and attractions and some have full bars.
For more than 25 years we have been producing family fun mini festivals either weekly or monthly.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It’s always tough to find the balance of vendors to attendees. And then what types of vendors do you want at these events. It’s not for the faint of heart. Event production is the 5th most stressful job in the United States. Permitting, getting the vendors, marketing to the right demographic are just a few of the obstacles.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Odd Market – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Odd Market is a family fun curated show. We are known for producing events with great vendors, lots of food trucks, emerging bands and tons of kid’s attractions.
I am most proud of the fact that we have been an advocate for local business for more than 26 years.
What sets us apart is the diversity of the event. We are not a craft show, flea market, food truck event or music festival but we incorporate all those elements into Odd Market to create something for everyone.
Currently, we produce:
Odd Nights at The Autry every 3rd Friday of the month.
Odd Market on The Pier June 3rd
Odd Market at The Bloc every Wednesday
Odd Market in Central Park (Glendale) starts July 8th (Every 2nd Saturday)
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
