Meet Perla López Baray

Today we’d like to introduce you to Perla López Baray.

Hi Perla, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My energy, passion and creativity are captured in everything I undertake. My Signature Fragrance was born when I was looking into buying a perfume for my mother, Raquel, who has very sensitive skin and gets headaches with strong scents. My desire to surprise, inspire and empower my mom and women from all walks of life led me to develop my Signature Fragrance in 2009. The long-lasting signature fragrance is manufactured in the USA with the highest concentration of high-quality oils developed by CPL Aromas, a major international fragrance house based in London. In 2015, I expanded my brand by adding specialty hand-poured natural soy candles and handcrafted premium soaps to my Signature Collection. I also developed the Natural Collection, which includes specialty soaps and bath products. Made in the USA with high-quality natural ingredients, the products are an alternative to conventional items. The products are inspired by love and beauty and are free of preservatives, sulfates, parabens and detergents. The company operates from a faith-based standpoint embracing integrity, diversity, love, unity and empowerment.

My vision is to enhance the beauty and uniqueness of men and women and create a global network of support and empowerment through mentorship, fundraisers and business opportunities for influencers and ambassadors and for people who want to make a difference in their lives and the world around them. I’m very active in the community and have supported various non-profit organizations, schools, community and cultural events, among others. The overall purpose is to see people live an empowered life and to help them know how to walk in confidence and find beauty in everyday situations so that they can identify and fulfill their purpose and build a more meaningful life. “May the fragrance of your heart be the aroma of your dreams.”

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Running a small business has been challenging from the beginning. When I had the idea of developing my Signature Perfume, I didn’t know where to begin. After about one year of thinking about it, I decided to use Google to do research and find information. I contacted a lot of companies and all of them rejected me or didn’t respond to my emails and/or phone calls. Many said that I wasn’t a brand name or a celebrity. When I was about to give up, I received a positive response from the president of sales at Southeast Aromas, who said she loved my concept. Together with CPL Aromas, they developed my Signature Fragrance.

Once the product was ready, I ran into another challenge: finding the ideal customer. This can be particularly difficult when your brand is not a household name and you sell the product online. Marketing the product was expensive and in 2009, we didn’t have the opportunities that we have today to promote and sell products on social media. Managing the business alone is another challenge. I focus on sales, marketing, customer service, shipping, social media, etc. and also have a full-time job. Both are very demanding and require a lot of time and energy. Sometimes people tell me to forget about the business but I keep going because I believe in my vision and purpose.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a multi-Emmy nominated news journalist committed to excellence in serving, informing and connecting with viewers and communities to genuinely make a positive impact in their lives and the world. I am dedicated to cultivating relationships and professional networks to generate exclusive and compelling stories that inspire others to be agents of change. I was born and raised in the state of Chihuahua, Mexico and with my luggage and dreams, immigrated to New Mexico in 1996. I left my family and friends in my homeland and began a challenging journey in the United States where I had to learn how to communicate in a different language. I went to school and almost gave up on my dream of becoming a journalist because I was nervous about the language barrier.

However, my desire to serve and inform the community was more powerful than my fears, and I graduated with honors in 2001 and obtained a double major in Journalism and Mass Communications and Foreign Languages and a supplementary major in Latin American Studies at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces. My television career began in Albuquerque, New Mexico and a year later moved to Pennsylvania to be one of the pioneers of the only Spanish newscast in Southeastern Pennsylvania, Southern New Jersey and Delaware at that time. As a Hispanic and proud of my roots, I wanted to serve as a voice and promote the values and richness of the growing and diverse Hispanic population in that region. Having spent most of my time in the northeast, I’ve been blessed to travel the globe and the United States on different news assignments and meet people from all walks of life. My informative reporting has been well-rewarded with multiple Mid-Atlantic Emmy nominations as an anchor, producer and reporter. I’m currently the news anchor and executive producer of WFMZ-TV 69 News, Spanish Edition.

In 2019, I was chosen as one of 10 American journalists to participate in the German/American Journalist Exchange Program. For a two week period, we visited NATO Headquarters and the European Commission in Brussels, Belgium as well as three other cities in Germany including Berlin to learn directly about Germany’s culture, history, politics and practice of journalism. During this trip, I gathered enough material for a five-part series titled “The Fall of the Berlin Wall: 30 Years Later”, which was nominated for a Mid-Atlantic Emmy in 2020. With my mic on hand, I’m always ready to inform the community. My unforgettable and challenging journey has taught me valuable experiences, but most importantly to share something that is priceless: my heart, energy, faith and love for humanity.

What’s next?
My parents and grandparents taught me the value of serving and giving back to the community. While I fully understand that I cannot change the world on my own, I have learned that I can have a positive impact on individuals so that their lives are more meaningful and rewarding. I believe this is possible through the power of media and storytelling. I would like to share and focus on more stories and testimonies of people who are having an impact on society and can inspire others to create change to make a difference in their lives and communities. I would also like to expand my brand and grow my social media presence as a journalist, small business owner, influencer and content creator to connect with new and diverse communities and collaborate with companies whose values align with mine. Also, after being away from home for many years, my desire is to move back to the southwest or west coast and spend more time with my family who now resides in New Mexico.
