Meet Pei Yen Chen of Bling Bling Dumpling in Los Angeles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Pei Yen Chen.

Pei Yen, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
This all started on a trip back to Taiwan. When me, my girlfriend and Cindy who is my business partner now went to Taiwan, we were so excited for the food. I think that was the main purpose besides being born there and haven’t been back since I was a child it was a completely different experience for me. We would walk out of our hotel and there would be food right there being cooked on the side walk. We would eat our way through the city of Taipei. The food was amazing just having fresh food everywhere you walk too. So as we returned, we realized, we couldn’t just walk down the street and grab something fresh and simple. Then we decided to make dumplings. It’s what we know, it’s what we grew up with making. We would have dumpling parties every weekend and I would have left overs and would take it too work. Also we would use organic ingredients especially the meat! Because in the Asian culture they don’t really think about where there meat is coming from. After a while someone said to me, “why don’t you sell these?” I was like no, it’s just something I never thought of. But after thinking about it, I told Cindy let’s do it!! She wasn’t ready but I kept pushing it. So we started selling lunch boxes. Our first order was crazy, we had 50 lunch boxes to make and we had no idea what the hell we were doing! But we figured it out step by step. From there on we’ve learned a lot and we are still growing. Now we don’t do lunches anymore we catered and do pretty big music festivals. Which is something I never thought I would ever be in and it’s a whole different world. I have to say the food business is hard, but what I’ve learned is take your time and don’t crash and burn. Learn as much as you can and keep moving on.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There’s so many! License, learning about different food license and permits! Not having any culinary or food background, we had no idea! Also how much it cost to start! It’s really true, you have to put money in to make money!

Bling Bling dumpling – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We specialize in hand making the dumplings. Also the ingredients. Having good ingredients is vital to having a good dumpling! Also something about hand making dumplings makes it taste better! I think I’m most proud of our staff, because I believe our staff is our backbone and they are an essential part of our business. I treat my staff like family and that’s what makes this company so great because of the people that’s behind it! I think what sets us apart from others is that we have innovative ideas, like having dim sum carts at parties. Or having different types of dumplings, like cheeseburger dumplings or the chicken taco dumplings.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I think the proudest moment is vending at the Coachella music festival. The logistics of this festival is quite a huge task and after it’s done, the feeling of accomplishment is really rewarding.
