Meet Pegah Naserifar of The Mill Creative Studio in Downtown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Pegah Naserifar.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Pegah. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I am a visual effects artist who was born and raised in Tehran. Right now, I am working as an FX Artist in The Mill.

I am coming from the background of computer science with a huge interest in computer graphics and visual effects industry. As far as I can remember, I’ve always loved reading books and watching movies, more specifically stories always mesmerize me which is the main reason where I am today. I started to write my short stories at the age of ten and I won some local and national awards for writing short stories but those days I never thought of that as a career path.

I chose to study computer science because technology is my other passion. I learned a lot during my bachelor’s degree in operating systems, programming, information theories, and much more, but the major thing which affected my life fundamentally was learning to take up challenges. So I moved to London (England) to study for a master’s degree in Multimedia and 3D technology at Brunel University. The place I got more familiar with the VFX industry encouraged me to be part of that. It was my first experience of living abroad with a different language and culture, such an amazing and precious practice for my next move which was moving to the US.

After working a couple of years as a 3D Generalist, I moved to the USA and received my MFA from Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) in Visual Effects. Every day of school for a person like me who came from a different background was full of information about VFX history and techniques. I have become much more aware of the VFX industry requirements and skills. And more importantly, I met a lot of talented people there who are now successful artists in the industry. After school, I joined The Mill creative studio as a CG Artist and working in successful advertising projects for big brands like Starbucks, Nissan, Chantix, Google, etc. side by side of professional artists.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Well! I think this is so true that “Nothing is easy, but who wants nothing?” I faced a lot of challenges and have struggled a lot and I am sure the rest of the way won’t be without ups and downs and this is the nature of achieving goals. Definitely being far from family, communicating with a new language, adopting, and immersing yourself with the new culture are my biggest struggles so far.

Despite all of those challenges, I am always grateful for those influential friends and colleagues throughout these years who support me with their genuine insights.

The Mill Creative Studio – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I am a VFX artist and my focus is on Effects in Houdini for advertising, games, and movies. I have always tried to expand my knowledge and never stop learning. What I really enjoy about my job is that it is a combination of art and technology. I have the skills of an artist to make 3D scenes appealing and photo-realistic, in the meanwhile, I do use scripting and programming in every project.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
The first thing that came to my mind when I am thinking about success is trying our best in all aspects of everything we do. Self-belief is the result of doing our best and helps us to keep fighting for what we desire the most. To me, success is all about not giving up and standing up every time after falling down, and I think it applies to all aspects of life.
