Meet Patrick Griley

Today we’d like to introduce you to Patrick Griley.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I feel like a persons journey is never done, and mine is just beginning. I attended college at the University of Colorado Boulder for two years studying communications. It was during my time at Boulder that I realized my passion was in design, and I transferred to the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in Los Angeles CA.

I received two degrees from FIDM. My first degree is in Apparel Industry Management, which is the business of fashion and how clothing is created from a conceptual idea to placing and selling that product in a storefront. My second degree is an Advanced Design Degree in Menswear. This degree included a final competition among the students to see who could design, manufacture, and market the best collection. I was awarded the first place for my clothing line.

After graduation, I went to work at Aurora Outerwear, a company I helped create. I ran daily operations, designed all of the pieces, created cohesive color stories, and handled the manufacturing and content creation for the whole brand.

I have discovered that creativity and inspiration are very important to design. My photography allows my design ideas and creativity to shine through. I enjoy creating content for small brands/influencers and friends. My photography style is Lifestyle Portraiture and I love capturing all the amazing moments in my life with friends and through my travels.

Please tell us about your art.
I have two styles of art that my life revolves around, the first is Outerwear Design. I love the outdoors and I love creating gear that will help and protect me while I am out in the outdoors. While I was growing up I was always looking for ways to make things better, whether it be making a jacket warmer, adding pockets, or changing the fit, I was always creating designs that I felt were improving or making the best version of what my ideas were.

My design style bridges the gap between function and style. I think there is a balance in all aspects of life, so when I design I want to create stylish fashion-forward pieces but I want them to perform at the highest level possible. I do not think you need to sacrifice style for function or function for a style everything has a balance.

My second art is photography and this grew out of a pure passion for taking pictures of what I was doing, where I was traveling, and all the adventures I took with my friends. I shoot lifestyle portrait photography so I try to capture the feeling of that day in my pictures. Slowly it started to turn into a way for me to express my creativity and gain inspiration for my outerwear designs.

Given everything that is going on in the world today, do you think the role of artists has changed? How do local, national or international events and issues affect your art?
I totally think the role of an artist has changed, I think that people look for new ways to portray how they are feeling and that artist today are able to communicate real-world issues and feelings of the people that get lost in some of the mainstream media.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
