Today we’d like to introduce you to Pat Bigley.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Pat. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
In 1997, I found my way into an Executive Search Company located in the Valley. The company had a small division working in the computer game industry which I thought was very interesting. Previously I was a musical talent agent and a Hollywood Talent Agent so recruiting (staffing) in the game industry seemed to be right down my alley. I worked for the company for 10 months and realized I was more interested in “doing my own thing”, broke away from the company and started Prime Candidate, Inc. After a great deal of networking and learning everything I could about the industry, I hired my first employee. She had a great deal of knowledge about the art and design world in gaming so she was very helpful to me having worked at a major game publisher as a game artist for several years.
Shortly after that, I hired another person and we were off and running. Working throughout the US and Canada, we continued to network, go to trade shows and meet as many industry people as we could. Currently we have 5 people who contract with us, we all work remotely, and 2 full time employees – me and over the past 10 years, my son has been working with me. Basically he handles the staff and I handle the business. Our team is terrific and thankfully we are well known and highly respected.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Building a company is never easy. Sometimes you grow quickly, even too quickly and sometimes, it seems like it will never work. This is the 3rd business I grew personally or helped to grow so I was aware of many of the issues that go into building a business. Growing too fast is really dangerous so I was very careful not to do that. We are now 21 years old and have sustained many up and downs. I think our success has been caused by being straight and honest with our candidates and clients, being very ethical and loyal to everyone and always responding to emails, phone calls and requests, even if we can’t help someone looking for work. We never “burn a bridge” and will always stay highly professional in all respects.
