Meet Pasadena Photographer: Ambar

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ambar.

Ambar, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was always into pictures. Earlier I loved to be in the frame but as I became a mommy, (like almost every other mother), I enjoyed being behind the camera taking pictures of my little baby. I signed up for some classes and started learning to better my images and polish whatever skill I had. Youtube and the internet in general were my best buddies. I knew I wanted to be a photographer some day but I didn’t think I had enough knowledge or experience just yet. People started asking me to cover their events or do photo shoots for them. It was Sept 2012 when one evening we were talking and my husband and my brother thought I should just jump into it. My brother made my first ad on Craigslist that evening and I have not looked back since. To be honest I didn’t think it would do this well but I am very blessed to be doing something I love and calling it my career.

Has it been a smooth road?
It has been smooth for the most part, in the beginning my main source of advertising was Craigslist. Since it was almost Halloween and the end of year and I was charging almost nothing to build my portfolio and gain some experience, I did get business but then in the new year, I had absolutely nothing. People didn’t know me enough to want to work with me. I knew I had to get my work and word out there to make some what of a mark in this competitive field. The major struggle I think I faced was the advertising and the fact that people wanted to work with me but didn’t like the slight price hike I had, they wanted me to work for the same price I had started with. So that was kind of hard.

How would you describe the type of kid you were growing up?
I was always a girly girl. I used to love dressing up. Even if I had no place to go, I would dress up and have my sister take pictures of me, I never ever thought there will be a time when I would enjoy being on the other side of the camera. I still love to dress up when I can. I loved shopping and still do, to me it’s therapeutic. A girl can never have enough shoes, I was no different. I enjoyed reading, give me anything fiction and I would read it. I could finish a whole novel in a day and start another one if I got down to it. True story!

Is there a specific memory from when you were younger that you really miss?
I have so many fun memories, it’s hard to point out a favorite. But I LOVED Disneyland and every time we visited, I was the happiest girl on the planet. It was fun family time. I used to go there as a little girl and now I take my kids there. So many memories come rushing to me. All of my great moments as a child are with my family. My parents and my younger brother and sister. We still sometimes sit and talk about old times, it’s just an amazing feeling to be able to talk about so many moments in life when it comes to best memories and I feel very blessed.

So, what should we be on the lookout for, what’s next in store for you?
What I really want and I aim to do is to get my name out there. My dream is that when someone is looking for a family and kids photographer… basically a lifestyle photographer, Ambar Hasan Photography pops up from every corner. I want to be known for my work and recommended. That’s my goal and I am getting there, I get a lot of recommendations so that’s awesome but I am greedy and I want more (hahaha).

I am planning to do a give away or maybe a sort of a casting call for couples to do engagement style photography later this year or early next year. Apart from that, I am already planning my Halloween/Fall and Holiday mini sessions so I am working on ideas for those.
I want to learn more and master my skills, maybe in the future go back to school for it. I also really want to own a proper studio. Right now I have a pop up that I just set up when I have a shoot but I really want to have a studio where I wouldn’t have to pack the lights and backdrops when I am done. I am working towards it, hopefully in the near future I will get what I want because I know that if you want something bad enough and work hard for it, you will succeed, there is no doubt in that, it’s only a matter of time.

  • I am offering full hour sessions with edited digital images for $130-150.
  • My seasonal staged mini sessions that are very popular in my clientele are for $50-$65.
  • I cover small events like birthday parties, baby showers etc. for $180 for the first two hours and then $70 each additional hour.

Good job! I loved your words where you said, ‘if you want something bad enough and work hard for it, you will succeed, there is no doubt in that, it’s only a matter of time.’ Just checked out your website, there is some amazing work there. I will be contacting you for a shoot very soon. Keep it up.
