Today we’d like to introduce you to Sloane Knowles.
Sloane , please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My love of makeup started a very long time ago. Even as a child, I was extremely creative & found myself always attracted to anything strange or bizarre. Halloween was always my favorite holiday because it was the only other time besides photo shoots or recitals that I could wear makeup and be whoever I wanted to be.
I started acting when I was 4 years old and ate, slept, and breathed the performing arts.
I trained in over 15 styles of dance & had booked my first national commercial by the time I was 7. Needless to say, people have been putting tons of makeup on me since before I could remember and being on set feels a lot like home.
I was only allowed to wear makeup for work & auditions until I was about 13, which was when my parents finally lost the battle to winged eyeliner and gave up. In high school cheerleading, I learned the importance of eyebrows what a difference eyelashes made.
My first trip to Halloween horror nights made me fall in love with gore all over again and during my senior year in high school American Horror Story Murder house was released which sparked my interest in the special Fx industry and drove me right into my first makeup school in 2013.
Shortly after Ruby Makeup Academy, I ended up at EI in Hollywood, California.
Where I got a more in-depth education in special FX, HD, High fashion, Theatre & film makeup.
I did a few short films after graduation, followed an add on craigslist and ended up at the number one rated, celebrity airbrush tanning studio In Los Angeles at the time, voted by allure magazine. Unfortunately, the business fell apart after two successful years and it was an extremely difficult time for everyone involved, but I learned everything I know from that business and many clients have followed me and continue to support my dreams today.
I’m 22 years old, am in the beginning stages of my own startup and am building a brand for the mobile beauty services I provide to the greater Los Angeles area. I have traveled as far as New York for clients in the past. I am well known in the pageant and bridal communities for custom airbrush tanning parties & tattoo cover up that lasts up to 3 days.
I am currently working full time as a makeup artist and proudly work for one of the leading makeup and beauty lounges in America, in West Hollywood,Ca and couldn’t be happier.
I do plan on breaking into the television and film world a bit more and doing more Special FX in the future. My dream is to be a part of a team for a show like American Horror Story or Scream Queens. For now, I am focusing on growing my business and making people feel glamorous and beautiful. On Aug,19th 2016 I had my first #GetMade by Sloane, brand launching event for my team, close friends, family and current clients. It was a huge success , filled with champagne, silk robes, lots of laughs and free facials. We can’t wait to reveal what we have in store for Los Angles in January 2017. We plan on a huge business launch party and everyone’s invited!
I’m a perfectionist and I believe what sets me apart from other artists and my brand is the experience and treatment each client receives when I work with them. The beauty industry can be a tough world for women, it’s truly a love-hate relationship for me.
One of my clients who had never worn makeup before, and had been down a pretty difficult road, looked at herself in the mirror with makeup on, and hair done for the first time and through tear-filled eyes said, “ I never knew I was pretty”.
I think a lot of the beauty standards we have for ourselves today, especially in Hollywood are unattainable and every woman knows what it’s like to feel bad about ourselves in some way. Makeup isn’t meant to hide, it’s meant to enhance, so you have the confidence to go out there and take over the world because we are already beautiful. It is so important to know your own beauty though and sometimes it takes a little highlighter and blush to show a girl. That’s all I’m here for.
Has it been a smooth road?
Paying for school on my own was rough, Having my whole family live across the country, Dealing with the loss of a mentor, dealing with difficult relationships, not having steady work. I even drove for uber for extra money at one point and wanting to completely give up makeup altogether.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and career?
I don’t believe in luck. I think everything happens for a reason and I like to think we create our own reality.
I’ll say I have been blessed. I firmly believe in the law of attraction and I think I created my own luck, I attracted the things I wanted into my life by staying true to myself and doing things my way.
Is there a quality or characteristic that has played an outsized role in your success?
Determination. I think life tends to make us uncomfortable when it’s time for a change. My determination to succeed and hunger for knowledge caused me to be in a constant state of uncomfortable growth. I was climbing and achieving at such a rapid rate that I had no time to be upset about my circumstances or the fact that I was spreading myself too thin. Everything was happening too fast and not fast enough. It got hard but it was exactly what I asked for. Being determined means keeping your eye on the prize no matter what and I made my decision that this is what I wanted to do, and nothing could change that. My entire career rests on my determination alone. If I didn’t fight for the things that I wanted, then who else would.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Hollywood is historically known for being built off of dreams. Everyone who comes here is working hard towards something. It makes the competition fierce and the talent incredible. I also love how diverse, open minded and rich in culture LA is. The only thing I could honestly do without is the traffic and the parking. I think my fellow Angelinos can agree with me on that.
