Today we’d like to introduce you to Paris Powell.
Paris, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I was born and raised in Carson where I grew up as a PK (Preachers Kid). This is where my love for music started. I was placed on drums at a very young age around 4-5 years old. I played church gigs very young and thats when I realized music was my passion. I grew up in the church scene where my craft grew.
I would come home from school and practice day and night. I hit a rough patch in my life where I had to take some time away and when I returned, I enrolled myself in La Recording School to be a music producer. I learned so much being in school but then I dropped out to learn more on my own. Let me tell you YouTube became my best friend in learning all I needed to know and actually I am still learning every day. I surrounded myself with people in my craft and that is when I was introduced to Trippie Redd and thats when the magic started. I came to find myself producing songs for Trippie. I produced In Too Deep and Feel Good off of his second mixtape A Love Letter To You Too and I produced Buss Down and Romeo & Juliet from his first mixtape A Love Letter To You. Producing these tracks for him opened some doors for me. I have produced for TeeFlii, Lil Twist and other up and coming artist and have been in the studio with some of the hottest producers. After working on everyone else music and albums, I then branched out to start working on my own music as a recording artist. I just signed a Distribution Deal with Create Music Group which I am really excited about, I am working on my album and already have my single ready which is some hot music coming yall way.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
This hasn’t been a smooth road for me at all. Being a woman in the industry is so hard. Its a male-dominated industry and they don’t take you seriously no matter how talented you are. It took me three years to get my money for the music I produced for Trippie because I was left out of the paperwork process, I had record labels looking to sign me and artist wanting to work with me and Goose(who is another producer I worked with) left me out of the whole process. Being new to the music industry I didn’t really understand what to do or what was going on so until I had family helping and actual friends who have been in the industry longer than me I was able to get a lawyer and get things situated and figured out. I have a good team behind me making sure from here on out all of the business get handled the right way. Its never gonna get easy being a woman especially a black woman. All I can say is keep your head up. Stay focused and stay educated so that way no one can get over on you. Keep people around you that have the same goals as you and wanna see you win just as much as they wanna win.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I am a music producer/music artist. I produce music for artist and I also sing. I am known for my eccentric sound and melodic feel to my music. I am not like a lot of these producers now and days I don’t go with the trends and what’s hot now and days I stay true to myself and true to the sound that feels right. I am most proud of the music I have produced so far In Too Deep has went Gold and thats an amazing feeling as a female producer. I am proud of the fact that doors are still opening for me and GOD continues to work through me and my music. What sets me apart is my musical background in church. I know what music is supposed to really sound like. I don’t just throw some tracks together. I make sure things make sense and the music feels right to the soul.
What were you like growing up?
I was just like any other kid growing up a life ball full of energy. I stayed at somebody’s church playing gigs making money at a very young age. I loved listening to music especially that old school R & B music. I was known for lip singing in the mirror to some of my favorites. Growing up my house was the house to be at we had all the game systems and it was just a fun atmosphere to be in. Being a preacher kid was interesting, I grew up playing bible trivia and singing and rehearsing all the church music, I loved sports big fan of football. I was more of a tomboy growing up so I was always around the boys. I am still that same fun loving ball of energy just more so focused on my career my music and building a stronger relationship with GOD. I am also focused on buying properties and owning businesses out here
