Meet Paige Peterson of 101 Dance Center in Hollywood Hills

Today we’d like to introduce you to Paige Peterson.

Paige, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I had been a professional dancer/actress for many years and also had taught dance everywhere from Abby Lee’s to Millennium. I knew it was time to create my own dance studio but I felt scared to really do it. My husband Richard was really supportive and had told me we should just go for it. He’s really good with business decisions and getting things done. I knew he was right but I was nervous to take on such a huge task or creating our own business. Finally, after I had another really stressful day of teaching at someone else’s studio I came home and we both said, “Let’s just do it”. We went out that day looking for spaces and almost immediately found the space we now call home. It already had good floors and 2 nice rooms for classes. We’ve been so fortunate to find such a great group of students (and parents) to come take classes, awesome teachers and great companies that rent/film at our studio. Dancing With The Stars has been rehearsing here since our second month of business!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting up without any investors and a zero budget for marketing or staff was not exactly easy. We did as much marketing as we could and did everything ourselves. Also, creating a name for ourselves in such a big city is hard and takes time. We think The “word of mouth” factor is the best form of advertising and that can’t happen until people know and trust the business. We are starting to see the benefits of “word of mouth” finally. It’s nice to know our students/clients are happy and want to refer their friends.

101 Dance Center – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
101 Dance Center has a little something for everyone. My love is to teach children to dance classes in a fun, welcoming environment where students leave feeling encouraged, rather than picked on. We also have wonderful yoga classes for all ages several days a week and an awesome adult hip hop class Thursday nights. Wednesdays we call “ladies night” because the evening starts with belly dance class followed by burlesque jazz.

“Sweat Squad” happens every Saturday and it is open to all ages. It’s an hour-long hip-hop/workout class. We even have violin and soon piano lessons! Really, the variety of classes is what sets us apart from others. Having constant influx of film and tv shoots is great too and our students always get excited about those.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Our proudest moment was having our first recital here last May. Seeing our students and their families celebrating our hard work and putting on such a good show was amazing for us. It is very rewarding to see this place full of happy dancers.
