Today we’d like to introduce you to Osekalome Akhile.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Osekalome. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I got into personal training kind of by accident. I fractured my spine playing basketball in high school and it interfered with my collegiate career heavily. I hated the feeling of being weak and not being able to move without pain. I studied Exercise Sports and Science in college just so I could learn more about my body and how it functions. Shortly after college, I ran into an Equinox trainer while I was at my part-time job and the rest was history as far as my career as an Equinox trainer. I married my best friend from college and when we had our first child, my identity as a father shifted my identity altogether. It genuinely changed how I viewed everything in my life and how I wanted to go about it. I didn’t have the best relationship with my father, and especially with my first being a girl, I wanted to be the best father I could possibly be. I quickly learned through trial and error that the only way to be the best husband and best father was to be the best version of me first. I needed to be at my best not just physically, but also emotionally and mentally. I created Daddy Fitness because I felt that the Dad Bod was not just a physique issue, but a mentality thing as well. I wanted to create something with health and fitness at the forefront, that would serve to inspire dads everywhere. I wanted to change the narrative of dads being guys that have kind of lost themselves, letting life happening to them rather than taking control of it. Changing dads from couch potatoes drinking beer and watching the game to playing and running around with their kids. We all want our kids to live their best life. In order to do that, we have to show them, not just tell them.
Has it been a smooth road?
The hardest part is taking a great idea that you are passionate about and turning it into something tangible. Truly the hardest part for me has never been creating the vision but learning how to start on one thing at a time when there is so much that I want to do at once. So right now, I have been putting all my effort into the online one on one training portion of the business. I want dads to look in the mirror and see themselves as the same superheroes our kids see in us. That starts with living a healthy and active lifestyle. It is no secret that we feel better when we look better and take charge of our health. I am in a special position where I understand fully what my clients are going through and we need our own community to stay motivated, inspired and to push through.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Daddy Fitness is all about helping dads be the best they can be so that they can be the best for their families. This starts off with their health from a fitness and nutrition standpoint and then expands into their mental health and energy as well.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I am originally from Oakland and have been in the bay area the majority of my life. LA is a different wave, but it is still California. One of the things I brought with me as an Oakland native is the natural energy to create community. I have created a great community of amazing people that inspire me every day to do what I am doing. As a result, I am even more driven to create this community of dads and am currently working on creating events locally and expand it!
