Meet One of LA’s Most Impressive Tennis Pros: Sunny

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sunny.

Sunny, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’m a 40 yr. old medical doctor who used to play professionally, before getting into medical school. Right now, I’d rate myself conservatively a 5.5 on the tennis scale, 7.0 being the highest. I methodically coach personalized one-on-one tennis lessons. Besides being an ex-college tennis player, currently, regularly play Men’s Singles USTA Tournaments in LA- and have been the Champion on quite a few as well, at different competitive tiers 4.5 and upwards on the previously mentioned spectrum.

I work with clients existing technique to help them play a smarter & more competitive game. Together, we work on their sub-optimal areas of play & help improve them gradually but definitely!

Some of the technical tennis areas we’d work upon are:
Forehand, Backhand, Serve, Topspin serve, Slice, Chops, Volleys, Smashes, Killer angle shots on both flanks.

Overarching Strategy:
For tournament players, I work on matchplay strategy-on how to max out your skill-set while also outfoxing your opponent. These include, but not limited to, ‘chip&charge’ approaches or when to be a baseline hugger, customize lessons according to a player’s unique style of play and mindset, endurance training, off-court strength and training regimens, diet and nutrition counseling, Cardio Tennis and ‘pound-burner’ regimens for folks who’re sick and tired of being that hamster on that treadmill in the gym– and much much more..

I specialize in teaching ‘Topspin’ (also called as ‘forward spin’, ‘slicer’, ‘brush up’ in popular parlance…) I teach it according to the new school of thought of an ‘Open Stance’ vis-a-vis the traditional old school method of ‘closed stance’ with the left knee across & sideways for right handers. This is how the pros are playing modern tennis nowadays & this is how you reduce stress on the joints of your body, importantly the back & the knee joints. It makes playing tennis so much more instinctive & so less mechanical.. I have the method down pat. With me, I can practically guarantee that given twice-thrice a week lessons, within 3-4 months of a flat forehand, you’ll be hitting smooth & relaxed topspins like the pros you see on TV! Not exactly like them of course.

About my personality: In my lessons, I’m easygoing, easy to talk to, calm, relaxed, systematic without being compulsive & methodical without being inflexible.

My Credo.. I have a unique philosophy of tennis instruction in which I will not micromanage each & every one of your shots on court like most other pros but through a process of intense repetition, will get you where i desire you to be.. Yes, that means no nagging on court. We’ll be having a ball on court with our share of fun & laughs!

My Clientele: I teach all age groups. The inception of Tennis Lessons LA was in 2007 and I always have a spectrum of 15-20 students at the very least, taking personalized tennis instruction in Pasadena under me, at any given point of time, little kids to teenagers to the elderly…

And Much More… My services also include a free weekly email newsletter designed only for my students. This is information handpicked & researched by me customized for each and every client, geared to help you play smarter & more competitively. These are tips, pointers, strategies & thinking tools, culled from prestigious tennis magazines, the internet, & some pointers in my own words when I have the time. These newsletters orient a client’s tennis to be more intelligent, more instinctive & more on auto-pilot..! Ultimately, the end goal of these emails is to help the client think as smart as the professionals do when they’re playing their own tennis. And that’s not as hard as it sounds, I guarantee you..

Has it been a smooth road?
It has not been always easy. For example, carving out time from medicine & healthcare is always an ongoing challenge. Reschedules and cancellations on client’s ends can be a bug-bear, as also rains in a city like LA with almost no indoor facilities. I persist with it because it’s a labor of love for me-it gives me immense satisfaction to teach my enduring passion, and extremely gratifying to see a grin on a student’s face when they finally ‘get’ that down-the-line forehand they’d been angling for, over weeks/months. Teaching is super emotionally rewarding for me. Besides, it keeps me super-fit as well! Otherwise I’d be on the couch after work- growing a beer-belly 😉

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Tennis Lessons LA – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
What sets me apart?

  1. I’m a current LA Tournament player vis-a-vis majority of LA coaches who’re simply teaching pros at this point in their life and have hung up their ‘playing’ boots.
  2. I’m not simply a ‘human ball-machine’. I play hard with each and every one of my client, including competitive scoring matches as a learning tool. Most coaches are older and ill-equipped to compete.
  3. I go above and beyond the call of duty with personalized email feedback, and tailor sessions accordingly.
  4. I incorporate plenty of tennis training tools and teaching aids, not just ball baskets and hoppers.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love the beauty, diversity and outdoorsy nature of LA.

I hate the paucity of public transport.

I, Sunny, am double Covid-19 vaccinated via the Pfizer vaccine – and maintain social distancing and appropriate public health hygiene requirements.
