Meet Sophia Nguessan of SFS Active in Pomona

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sophia Nguessan.

Sophia, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I was visiting my hometown, Arlington VA, with my kids for a week, I broke my foot towards the end of my trip and decided to stay around family until I was fully healed before getting back on a flight to LA with the kids.

Although I was around family, it was challenging getting around on crutches with my kids – let alone being at home all day with them. Although I was around my family I got depressed, unmotivated and frustrated with my broken foot and the events that were going on in my life.

I really had to do some inner work and a lot of meditating. I wanted to get myself out of the funk I was in, I asked around to see what exercises I could do with my broken foot and started to perform exercises in my room that would target my core and abdominal muscles. I then spoke with other moms that were a part of fitness companies selling products from home and promoting online. I invested into protein shakes, resistance bands and watched a lot of fitness videos. To past the time, I would paint and workout and include my kids into my daily routine.

Once I was healed and cast off, I thought about other moms who were at home with their kids and wanting to get their bodies back, gain more confidence, strength and gain more energy. I was motivated to coach other moms, so I started going after my friends with kids. I would host group sessions and one on one sessions with the kids in the room! Schedules would get tight and tough, so I offered online sessions. Which were a hit for most because it was convenient! Our world is entirely technology-driven, getting online for a workout at home, works. Friends and family would start asking for my advice and tips on what to drink or eat. I started creating meal guides and grocery lists to fit their lifestyles and budget.

Its never easy starting a fitness journey or staying consistent with fitness, especially when raising children, there’s always a lot to think about and do.

Overall, people can get so caught up with their daily lives, finding the time to invest into your body can get challenging. When I was on crutches, the workouts I did at home kept me going. It always made me feel much better about myself and I was able to think more clearly and have good nights rest.

My goal as the owner of SFS Active is to make others feel wonderful in their bodies. I want my clients to receive guidance and support because I understand. I want my clients to know they don’t have to necessarily go to a gym to do a workout. They can get a perform an effective workout by just using the resources and tools they have around them.

Staying Active is key!

Has it been a smooth road?
There are usually struggles along the way. The main struggle is always trying to find the balance between being a business owner, my professional life and my children. The lack of cash flow can make situations overwhelming. Learning to accept failures and growing from them. Accepting the journey and the process can be challenging. And taking risks can be scary, there are times where I want to stay in a box but I have to keep reminding myself that if I don’t move from my comfort zone, I won’t grow.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
SFS Active – Strong, Fit, Sexy and Active. No matter where you are and no matter what space you are in, SFS Active gets you finding the time to get your body and mind feeling good. I am a personal trainer and coach. I specialize in women’s fitness and I’m coaching and training women almost everyday on fitness, nutrition and living a healthy active lifestyle. SFS Active is not only coaching and training. But it’s creating a community of moms, women in general and any individual wanting guidance on fitness.

SFS Active gives affirmation, fitness resources, words of affirmation, meal guides, tips, guidance, one on one personal training and virtual training.

Usually as a coach, I’m conducting 30-45 minute workout sessions daily I also host online group workout sessions, which are usually fun, because you are connecting with other friends from different states or countries connecting online and working out together.

What I’m most proud of as a company is the progression and the consistency despite the challenges. I started off with just doing online training only because I was mainly at home with my kids. Now I’m conducting group training, one on one session online and in person, creating meal guides and exercise videos.

What sets SFS Active apart from others is that we are online-based. LA is filled with many personal trainers and coaches. But LA is also filled with traffic. A 15-minute ride can end up being a 30-minute ride. Finding a space in your home or even outside can be very convenient, especially for entrepreneurs, individuals that work from home, or individuals that can’t necessarily leave out of the house but still want an extra push and a good workout from where they are located.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Although I am competing against a lot of fitness businesses, I think Los Angeles is great place for a business like mine. Almost everyone can benefit from trying to look and feel well. My main clientele are mothers who want to get their bodies back and feel sexy! There are plenty of moms wanting support and guidance when it comes to fitness.
