Meet Octavia Landix of Luv Fo Musiq Productions in Burbank/Greater LA

Today we’d like to introduce you to Octavia Landix.

Octavia, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Well, I am a music junkie at heart. As a child, I always wanted to learn how to play an instrument. At the age of 15, I started taking piano lessons in high school. After learning the basics, I began learning how to play songs I enjoyed by ear. Eventually, I begged my dad to buy me a keyboard one Christmas so I could practice outside of school. The keyboard had a section where I could play, program, and record different instruments inside of it. Every chance I got, I sat in my room for hours figuring out bass lines, chords, picking drum patterns apart and then record it. That started my journey towards my love for music production.

After high school, I got multiple opportunities to play for many celebrities with my friends. I have performed and opened for artists such as The Black Eyed Peas, The Isley Brothers, LL Cool J, Ndugu Chancler, Janet Jackson, and Macy Gray to name a few. Later on, I continued to study my instrument at Santa Monica College and moved to Boston, Massachusetts to study music production and composition at Berklee College of Music. There, my understanding of songwriting grew along with my piano chops and music theory.

When I came back to Los Angeles, I would record, produce, and mix my friends music for free to get more experience in the recording studio. I also became an understudy of some great people in the music industry for years. As time went on, I desired to get a better understanding of the science behind audio engineering to strengthen myself as a producer. I attended SAE Institute Of Technology in Los Angeles, graduated, and 2 months later, began working at Capitol Records in Hollywood, Ca for Rodney “DarkChild” Jerkins interning for 1 year. Working under Darkchild showed me first hand the in’s and outs of what running your own team looks like and what it takes to build your own empire. My favorite sessions were being apart of the recording process for Jennifer Lopez and Evan Ross. I also grasped the importance of what makes a song a “great” song as oppose to a “good” song. Once my internship with Darkchild came to an end, I decided to step out on faith and work towards building my company Luv Fo Musiq Productions.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
When I decided to step out and make this a reality, I was scared out of my mind! I was an Uber/Lyft driver by day and a music producer/engineer by night. Some days, I questioned if I should go and get a day job teaching with my degree from SAE because money was so scarce and work was few. By the time I was done driving in the day, I was uninspired to write or create anything. I also knew I could not go get a regular 9-5 because I would not be able to get my business off the ground working for someone else. Lots of sacrifices were followed by doubt because my logic was at odds with my heart.

The first year of Luv Fo Musiq Productions, I spent time networking all over LA at open mics, industry mixers, and music panels searching for clients. I would also play my music for industry pros looking for an opportunity like everyone else. I was starting from scratch and no one knew who I was so you can imagine the amount the callbacks I didn’t get.

The biggest challenge I have had to face was getting over my own personal fears. In this industry, you are placing your art on display to be criticized and judged. Once I became confident in my creativity and interpretation of music, I began making some of my best work and couldn’t care less about what people thought. In doing that, I have my own sound that makes people want to work with me.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Luv Fo Musiq Productions story. Tell us more about the business.
Our name speaks for itself. We love music and what it brings. Whatever style of music, we believe in creating and capturing the essence of what makes great music. We specialize in R&B, Hip Hop, and Pop and offer production, recording, and mixing services. We are most proud of creating music that sounds like no other. Whether it’s pop or jazz, we strive to create something fresh and innovative while also giving the listener an urge to want to hear more.

We work with local to A-list artist in the music and entertainment industry. We have done recording and writing sessions for Top Dawg Ent, Interscope, Atlantic, & Sony Music Group to name a few. Last year, we were apart of our first UK project. Composing, arranging, and mixing 4 songs on the EP album ‘KiK’ by upcoming artist Paul Nilson Jr. Currently, we have 3 projects in the works. A jazz album by incredible flautist/composer/arranger Sukari Reid Glenn. This album is extremely fun to work on and the musical arrangements are amazing. I have never heard Jazz this way in my life. We just released a new single entitled “Dreamers” by singer/songwriter Danyol Jaye and are working on his R&B EP project. I love the way he hears music. It always comes from what he feels, which in my opinion, is the recipe for memorable songs. Pop/R&B singer Dre Jermi is also working on an EP and we will be dropping his first single soon. We are developing and sound for him that is simple yet sultry. It’s gonna be a dope process. We are also recording live orchestration for major feature films, and TV. We are proud that artist are gravitating to our musical sound that is not dictated by what others feel we should sound like. People like us and that feels amazing.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Funny, I have grown not to believe in luck but destiny. I believe everything I have experienced, good or bad, had/has an appointed time for me. The good, along with the bad, has aided me to be the natural leader I am now and strengthened my faith beyond measure. Due to hardship, I have been able to overcome my fears and it proves I can keep going when the going gets tough.
