Meet Oana Bogdan Miller of PAINT:LAB in Santa Monica

Today we’d like to introduce you to Oana Bogdan Miller.

Oana, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
The studio started as the concept to realize a space where anyone interested in creating a fine art painting would be able to come in and use this space to make their work of art. Personally, I’ve been passionate about painting and art since I was a young girl, so being able to provide this kind of space to nurture creativity for the Los Angeles community has been very rewarding. It took about a year to outline a business plan and to find the first location and in March 2009, we were able to open our doors to the public. Originally, the studio was located on Main Street in Santa Monica but a few years went by and we found our improved and current location on 14th & Broadway.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
We’ve been in business for nine years and it hasn’t always been a smooth road! Some of our struggles along the way include marketing challenges and brand awareness for new customers. Understanding what our customers really want and need from our studio and what really appeals to them when they patronize our business. Attracting new customers and retaining old customers, marketing and things like this have been our biggest challenges.

PAINT:LAB – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
PAINT:LAB is a fine art studio open to the public where anyone can drop in and use the space to paint a work of art, take a painting class or even purchase art and painting supplies. There are many forms of artistic expressions but we focus on painting and drawing here. We are known for our Brushes & Bites guided painting classes for adults which include refreshments and also for our camps for kids, which we offer in the summer, during school breaks and on weekends. We also have a great selection of art supplies available for purchase in our studio at great prices. I think what we’re most proud of as a company, is the satisfaction we see in our customers once they’ve experienced their workshop or painting session and realize that creating art is such a meditative and worthwhile pastime. We are one of the very few bricks and mortar businesses that offer art and painting to all ages and experience levels. The ability to come into our inviting space and spend some time creating your own art is unique in this city.

What are your plans for the future? What are you looking forward to or planning for – any big changes?
Our plans for the future include the possibility of opening additional studios in other markets and bringing the creation of art to other communities and families.
