Meet Nykhi’a Bass of Fabulash Mink in Riverside County

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nykhi’a Bass.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Ever since about 2012, I was playing in makeup and once I discovered YouTube I found many different makeup artists and the first person I discovered was Rosel Kimberly. She taught me so much about beauty products and how to contour, highlight, and do eye shadow all from her tutorials and I was instantly in love with makeup and the type of art and creativity that came with it. I was constantly practicing my makeup skills and was always in the mirror, as my mom would say, “you stay in that mirror”; which I did. I eventually branched out to other makeup artists around 2015-now such as Jackie Aina, Alissa Ashley, and Aliyah Jay and incorporated their techniques into my own makeup routine. I figured that I was decent enough and finally started my own YouTube channel and Instagram page dedicated to makeup looks and tutorials. By seeing my love for makeup, in 2018 my mom and I created our own eyelash company Fabulash Mink since she saw that I was so passionate about makeup and wanted to create my own line.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
When it comes to the beauty industry it has definitely been a tough road, especially as a person of color. It’s always hard going into a drug store and finding a shade that suits well with our own skin tone rather than having to buy two different shades or no shade at all due to the range of shades that some makeup brands carry. As well as, being a small influencer has been hard since trying to maintain consistency with posting is very pretty tough when being a full-time student. Even trying to market and get our brand Fabulash Mink out there in the public eye has been difficulty, trying to come up with slogans for the lashes, coming up with creative ideas, trying to see who our competition are and whether or not they are selling similar products, etc. has really been a struggle to deal with and trying to gain that level of support from others.

Fabulash Mink – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Fabulash Mink is a partnership, with both my mom and I as the owners. For right now, we specialize in mink lashes and eventually would like to branch out into more makeup products like lipstick, lip gloss, and foundations. I’m most proud of our ability to always put the customer first and thinking of ways to attract our customers and keep them loyal to our brand. What sets us apart from others would be our packaging, we set a theme for our lashes and create a set of packaging designated to the theme which is a clever way to brand our products and differentiate us from our competition.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
To me success is not about money but rather the fulfillment I get from doing something that I love. Whether that be doing my own makeup or others and satisfying their needs through making them feel beautiful and giving them a confidence boost and just seeing the overall joy of someone I work with.
