Meet North Hollywood Photographer: Alton Mills

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alton Mills.

Alton, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was always into photography and graphic design since I was younger. My family encouraged me to take a few classes at our local community college in Michigan. I bought an entry level DSLR and took an Intro to Photography class. After that one class, I dropped out and started learning through trial and error. One year later, I decided to move to LA for a better life and it wasn’t long before I started to collaborate with actors, models, and dancers!

Has it been a smooth road?
It has definitely NOT been a smooth road. Even now, and I just celebrated my 5th year anniversary in LA. I’ve been through being homeless, being tempted to sell my camera countless amounts of times, the inevitable 9-5 (including Abercrombie and Fitch), and getting shot in an attempted robbery while on a trip back home to Detroit. Those are just a few.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Recently, two things. One of my photos made it to the Los Angeles Times which was amazing to see. Next, I recently photographed 2 Chainz’s new clothing line Hibachi For Lunch, which was absolutely unreal.

Were there moments when you had to struggle?
There were definitely times when I had to struggle. I’m still struggling five years into living in LA. The worst part is probably leaving your family at such a young age to pursue your dreams.

What’s your outlook for the industry in our city?
I feel like LA was the perfect move for my career. You can only do so much for your family if you’re afraid to risk anything. As for others, I guess it depends on them. If you can’t go one day without thinking about your dreams you should go after them fearlessly.
