Meet Noemi Smith of Angels by Noemi in Long Beach

Today we’d like to introduce you to Noemi Smith.

Noemi, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I am a lover of the Arts since I was a little girl. I started my art career by drawing and painting just as a hobby. I was a student of Technical Design and worked for several years doing ACAD Computer Technical Drawings in my country Peru. I never had the opportunity to show my artistic skills, until I came to live in the United States in 2005.

That is when I started making figurines in Cold Porcelain and also when I found Polymer Clay. I started making figurines in Cold Porcelain; a type of clay used for modeling in South America. As for my language, it was easier for me to learn from what I found online, even how to make my own clay (because this clay isn’t for sale in the USA). Later on, well I learned English of course! That is when I found out about Polymer Clay, I was so amazed by the art of doll making… I fell in love with it! I started researching about it, learning from videos online, collecting information from here and there. I became a self-taught artist. My inspiration is the female figure as well as children and animals. I started sharing my knowledge with new beginners, especially my Hispanic fellows, in this wonderful world of doll making.

Nowadays, I started making something more than dolls as was captivated with fantasy characters and creatures, and still constantly strive to improve my skills. I’m able to work in different mediums such as clay, polymer clay, fabrics, yarn, wool, anything that can get my hands on!

Angels by Noemi was born in 2008 as an independent artist, my studio is a small place in my own house, some of my dolls have been awarded on the Dolls Magazine, and I have participated in some Doll Conventions traveling out of State, sadly though the years the sales of dolls have become scarce. Right now, my profit is based on the retail of supplies to make dolls. Modeling, sculpting, online classes, some personalized custom orders and resin sculptures/figurines/dolls as before I was able to work just in polymer clay now I’ve learned how to mold, cast in resin, pieces that due the low cost are more likely to sell. My business is 90% online based as I do some live sales show here in California.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It’s been hard to make a living from this, selling one of a kind dolls have really down, actually this year I decided not to make more unless requested by a customer, I’ll concentrate on resin doll and sculptures as well as keep on moving my store for supplies, online classes, etc. But I believe in me and my art. My next goal is going to school for Special Effects Arts, as is in every way related to what I have been doing and for sure will complete what I have been missing as an artist, will also give me better opportunities for a good pay job as an artist. I’m still working hard, trying to reach this. It may happen this next year.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Angels by Noemi story. Tell us more about the business.
Among all my doll artist friends, I will be known as being able to do everything from a sweet lil angel child to a horrific demon pet. Lately more oriented to macabre/creepy inspired art. For my upcoming design of resin dolls I’m thinking about ghostly like children as way to call an attention into child abuse, human traffic, and pedophilia.

We Artists may be shy people, Art helps us to express our feelings, emotions and share it with everyone who has the call to understand.

Other than this, most of the supplies to make dolls I have for sale are also hand-made by me; things such as glass like eyes, hair, silicone molds and some tools I made/personalize myself.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I was in a way lucky/blessed to had the opportunity to come and live in this country or else I would have never found my call as an Artist.
