Today we’d like to introduce you to Noel Austria.
Noel, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I am a graduate of Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, Major in Accounting.
I used to work as a banker for years, but my love for dogs led me to pursue a career in dog training.
I started training dogs since 1993 and have attended various seminars in different parts of the world to improve my craft. When I came to the US in 2004, I prayed that I’ll be blessed with a business where I can help people with their dogs’ needs, whether it is in grooming, training, or just mere pet sitting.
In October of 2005, my prayers were answered! I set up a dog training, dog grooming, and dog boarding business in the City of Hawaiian Gardens. My ultimate goal is to give clients a personalized service that only a true dog lover can give.
Every dog grooming client is treated as a work of art, a masterpiece, carefully styled as if it is my own. As a dog trainer, my goal is to bring out the best in every dog, and at the same time, teach the owner the proper way to treat and handle their dog in order to have a mutually enjoyable life.
I have trained dogs for personal protection, police work, scent detection, agility, obedience, tricks, and any customized training that the owner may need. To name a few, I have trained dogs how to throw the trash, how to play basketball, recognize scent, jump at obstacles, protect their master, etc… (see videos at www.spratlyk9.com).
My first year in the business was tough and hard. Most dog owners have already developed camaraderie and loyalty to their own groomers. Only those that are rejected from other grooming shops are the ones that walked into my door; most of them with aggression problems. That is where my dog training knowledge came into play. To the surprise of most owners, I was able to groom their dogs despite the risk and danger.
What other groomers saw as high risk and dangerous, and waste of time, I saw it as an opportunity to apply my dog training skills, and to overcome difficult challenges.
And through word of mouth, clients started to come in.
After 5 years in the business, I have more than 2000 regular clients; thanks to the referrals of those who have availed of our services. In October of 2017, we will be celebrating our 12th year in the business. I have groomed and/or trained some of them as puppies, I’ve seen them grow, get old, and some have passed leaving me fond memories that I can never forget. I have learned a lot of good things from these dogs that no mortal being can ever impart. Their loyalty, willingness to please, transparency, unconditional love… where can you ever find them in this day and age? Except that they are written in the pages of a wagging tail, glowing eyes, and flopping ears whose only priority in life is to be with you in every minute of their lives.
After 12 years in the grooming business, and almost 25 years in dog training, I have realized that all of these dogs have become a part of me, as I was a part of them. I consider it a great privilege to have sown good seeds in them that made them a better pet, but most importantly I am thankful that they have made me become a better person.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The struggle was: how can dog owners experience what I have to offer when most of them already have their loyalty tied up to their respective groomers. Thanks to the unwanted, rejected, aggressive dogs that no groomers want to accept. They came into my door, and became my living, breathing advertisement.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Spratly K9 Training Center story. Tell us more about the business.
Our business is about Pet Services particularly Dog Grooming, Dog Training, and Dog Boarding. We are registered as DBA SPRATLY K9 TRAINING and WOOFYTAIL PET GROOMLANDIA. It is family-owned, and operated, and therefore would do everything to please and satisfy our clients. WE always strive to do more than what our clients expects us to do. Being dog lovers ourselves, we treat each dog as if they are our own.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I really do not believe in “luck” but rather in divine intervention. When I pray to ask for something, I’m putting myself below somebody who has the capability to give or withhold what I’m asking for. That being said, I’m willing to accept an answer that is a YES, a NO, or a NOT YET.
After praying about wanting to have this business, everything went smooth sailing.
There may be some rough times, but the good always outnumbered the bad. For me, that means a YES and a blessing from above! And I’m so grateful! That is why I have to take care of it because it was entrusted to me by the Almighty and not by luck or coincidence.
