Today we’d like to introduce you to Lori Nix and Kathleen Gerber.
Lori and Kathleen, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Kathleen and I have been making art collaboratively since 1999. Together we designed and constructed intricate table-top dioramas to photograph for fine art exhibitions. Our series “The City” was garnering a lot of internet attention, which lead to art directors and photo editors reaching out to ask us toward them. Over the years our art careers have blossomed and our fabrication business has expanded. We love helping clients bring their ideas into three dimensions.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Smooth road, not exactly, but it’s been quite an adventure! One consistent thing is educating clients about the nuances of building and using miniatures. It is often a new experience for them, and it does have some specific considerations. Experimenting with new materials and processes is always a hugely rewarding challenge too!
Tell us more about work.
We specialize in designing and constructing realistic models and dioramas. We work in a variety of styles and scales in miniature, creating intricate architectural spaces and highly detailed landscapes. Our abilities to deliver clients a complete package- models, props, backgrounds, lighted elements, and be available on set, has attracted a consistent group of returning commercial clients.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I think we’ve been very lucky, being at the right place and the right time and saying “yes” to opportunities large and small. We’ve also been very prepared to act on any luck coming our way.
