Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicole Steen.
Nicole, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My love for Dance and Fitness began at the tender age of three years old when my mother would take me to her Mommy and Me Fitness classes. I was obsessed and loved every second of working out and dancing. My parents put me in every activity possible which included ballet, tap, jazz, gymnastics, baton twirling, modeling, and even charm school. By age 7, not only was I performing at the local dance recitals, but I was also competing in beauty pageants, dance, and baton twirling competitions all over the west coast. I started to win a number of championship competitions and began flying all over the USA to compete.
Once I got into high school, I focused more on cheerleading, dance, baton twirling, track & field, and of course academics so I could get into my favorite school The University Of Southern California. As a freshman, I used my baton twirling skills to become a feature majorette for the USC Trojan Marching Band. I loved it so much but realized I loved dancing more and that’s when I decided to become a member of the World Famous USC Song Girls. I was a member for three years, and even finished my last year as captain! As a USC Song Girl, I was always dancing on the sidelines at the football and basketball games, working out, and performing while trying to keep a high GPA in school. Even with my full schedule, I made sure to give back to the community by working for the National Youth Sports Program to help the underprivileged children that lived near USC.
Doing all of this was tough, but it taught me a lot about time management and has helped me today to manage my time as a professional dancer, choreographer, fitness expert, and owner of my own cheerleading, dance, and fitness company.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road for me, but when you want something bad enough, you do whatever it takes to succeed. That is how I was brought up, and that’s how I lived my life. Beauty pageants, dance, and baton twirling competitions were very expensive and I watched my mother sacrifice everything just so I could compete all over the world doing what I loved! Seeing the struggle my parents went through to give me what I wanted, also taught me to hustle for what I wanted at a very young age. At seven years old, I was going door to door to different business to get sponsors for my beauty pageants and competitions. I started teaching private lessons, giving classes at the ymca, selling candy, hand made jewelry and anything to help pay for my activities all while practicing, performing and getting straight A’s. I still maintain this same hustle today because I believe in working hard for what you want. Nothing feels better than putting your all into something and succeeding in the end!
Nicole Steen Fitness – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I am my business Nicole Steen Fitness! Basically I do everything from teaching fitness classes all over Southern California for Equinox, to filming Fitness videos for big companies such as Beachbody, PopSugar Fitness, GymRa, and Hip Shake Fitness. I even have my own Tone N Twerk dvd and other workouts on Amazon!
What makes me different than others is that I do it all! Although I am known mostly for my Booty and Dance workouts, I am one of the very few fitness experts who can teach kickboxing and then go straight into a Zumba class, later on that night go perform my fire baton twirling skills at a Tommy Hilfiger fashion show, and wake up the next morning to run a cheerleading camp for the Snoop Dogg Youth Footballs League.
I know I do a lot and some people may say why don’t I focus on one thing, but I am FULL OUT and I love it all!!! God has blessed me with so much and I just want to share it with the world. I want everyone to be fit, experience a healthy lifestyle, and love life! My motto is “Let’s All Win!”
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The proudest moment of my career is not dancing for the biggest artists or training the hottest celebrities, but it’s getting the emails and direct messages from people all over the world saying how much I changed their lives with my workouts. Reading an email from a woman in Russia saying I helped her defeat depression with my dance workouts on PopSugar Fitness, or another one from the Midwest saying because of my fitness workouts on Amazon she has lost weight and can walk and play with her children again, means EVERYTHING to me! This is why I do what I do, I want everyone around the world to live their BEST healthiest life!
