Meet Nicole (Nicci) Dewez of Sunny Bunny Balloons

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicole (Nicci) Dewez.

Nicole (Nicci), let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I consider myself a Mompreneur! I have a background in Accessory Design and a degree in Visual Communications and Space Design from FIDM. Creating art makes my soul happy.

I became a Mom almost five years ago and I quit working as a designer to be a stay at home mom. About two months into parenting, I knew I needed to create and started an Etsy shop where I sold custom baby blocks for four years. Approximately one year ago, my block supplier closed its doors and I decided it was time to move on. I had dabbled in event design and decided that balloons would be a great new vehicle for my custom decals that I had also used on my block sets.

So last April, my adventures in ballooning began. March of 2020 was to be my biggest month yet, with three large events booked. Sadly, all of those events got canceled, one by one. During the first week of quarantine, my anxiety was through the roof. So I decided to balloon my house! Hoping it would cheer me up as well as my neighborhood. I designed a handful of custom decals with positive sayings like Be Kind, Keep Smiling, Home Sweet Home, Wash Your Hands, Virtual Hugs Etc. While I Was working to put up this giant display of rainbow message balloons, a reporter drove past my house and asked to do a report on me. A few hours later, I found myself on KCAL9 and my inbox was blowing up. Talk about divine timing! So many people wanted to hire me to do positive messages on their homes, too! This business quickly turned into creating no-contact front of home installations for all kinds of drive by celebrations. Now I am making more in a week than I was going to make the entire month of March and my calendar is booked! To say I am grateful is a huge understatement. The opportunity I’ve found in this pandemic is unreal. It has saved my sanity and brought so much joy to so many people in the process. I can’t wait to see what the future holds!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It wasn’t really much of a road at all, smooth or bumpy! I was working off of word of mouth while simultaneously parenting two toddlers full time. Which I still do! I have no doubt my creativity and passion for design would’ve gotten me there, just maybe four years longer than a stint on the news and a pandemic did. Wow, it is so weird to say that! My biggest challenge is finding balance. The more jobs I get, the more time I am focusing on business and not my family. Which feels really heavy at this moment in time but I also know how healthy it is for me to do these things for myself (and other people!). We need smiles and joy more now than ever!

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Sunny Bunny Balloons is named after my daughter, Sunny. There is nothing better than a child to inspire you to do something big. To dream big, because you want to show them that they can do it too if they work hard and believe in themselves.

As a creative designer, I have an over the top problem. I am always trying to outdo myself and I can’t walk away from a vision until I accomplish it the way I dreamt it up! So my business is based around larger scale balloon installations for events and celebrations. My current marketing is all about no contact installs on your home for drive by celebrations. This is working really well for me because no one is spending money on actual parties, so they have extra money for extravagant decor! Not only that but balloons make everyone smile so it is the perfect thing to have to cheer up the little ones when they hear that their parties with their friends are canceled. I am being challenged with time, themes, and designing on the fly when I pull up to a new house to decorate. It has made me grow immensely and I am forever thankful!

Something I add to my installations (for a cost!) are custom balloon decals. This is a labor of love and that is probably why many balloon artists don’t offer it! I can make a fancy birthday balloon with your name and age on it or I can create a forest of balloon wisteria flowers, I am up for all challenges! I think what sets me apart from other installation specialists is the love that I pour into my designs. I am not just putting up balloons, I am creating a unique piece of art from my heart. I strive to make my vision perfect and to blow your socks off!

What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was into fashion and art. It was a great time for fashion too, matching my jelly shoes to my earrings in the 80’s. So I am not surprised by the path I am on. I am incredibly grateful to have a husband that supports my creative endeavors but reduces the stress by having a job that provides for the family. I have a huge love for playing softball and a sassy tomboy side. My favorite part of this life is having kids that are my tiny mirrors. They show you the best parts of you and well, the parts that need improving. My husband wrote a bio for me and it is perfectly accurate. So here’s ‘me’ in a nutshell, written by my husband. ️

My wife values being rational. She doesn’t give herself to politics or gossip because she’s busy creating a space she loves……minute by minute. She was born in the Midwest but has slept under a Southern California sky since she was eight…..and you can tell. At her core, she is kind, low maintenance and loves cheese but she exudes style and originality without effort. She’s the least contrived person I know and she doesn’t count calories or collect regrets. She looks beautiful in the morning but hates waking up. She’d choose sleeping-in over money……but her children’s happiness over sleeping-in. She only makes excuses during exercise. She loves tattoos on old people. She’s scared of the part of the ocean you can’t see. Even when she’s not in it. She needs to create but she needs to believe in her creations. 15 years spent in the corporate world confirmed her discomfort for other people’s number problems. She doesn’t have all the answers but always knows what feels right. She yells sometimes and her laughing fits end in zombie noises. She doesn’t see the glass as half empty or half full……she sees the faucet and knows how to fix it. Her skin is thicker than mine and she’s capable of dealing. She assumes the best in other’s intentions. Who does that? She just is…… SunnyBunnyBalloons is just another light she is shining for those who take the time to reflect it.
