Meet Nicole McIntyre of Nicole M. Tutoring

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicole McIntyre.

Nicole M. Tutoring started in 2006 with a secret love for school. Throughout high school, Nicole voluntarily tutored both acquaintances and friends in math. It was at this time that she discovered a deeply-rooted passion for education and helping others.

After Nicole graduated high school, she went on to pursue a Bachelors in Cognitive Science at UCLA. This was the perfect fit, considering she was fascinated with everything related to the brain, especially learning.

Nicole paused tutoring her first three years of college, so she could focus on educating herself. However, as graduation approached, she knew she had to start thinking about her future career. She tried out a few different internships but found herself feeling unsatisfied and as though something was missing. After some deep contemplation, she realized that she needed to go back to doing what she loved – tutoring – even it was a more risky and unconventional career path.

She started by working with established tutoring companies, which gave her the opportunity to build up a reputation among local clients and obtain organic referrals. After about six months on that path, she finally felt comfortable enough to go out on her own.

Nicole has now worked with nearly two hundred students – of all different ages and backgrounds – and has expanded her repertoire to include science, psychology, and more. In her free time, she reads, does yoga, and spends time exploring the world with friends and family.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It was certainly not easy to make a full-time income from tutoring. In the beginning, I was limited by the number of clients I could take on because most students are in school for the first half of the day. At this point, I have built my business up to a point where I no longer have to worry about that much, but that was not always the case.

It has also been difficult to fulfill the demands and (sometimes unrealistic) expectations of every parent, especially in cases where they expect me to teach their kids everything they need to know in only an hour a week without placing any learning responsibility on the child.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Nicole M. Tutoring – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Nicole M. Tutoring is a tutoring company based in Santa Monica. I primarily service clients on the Westside. I typically meet clients at their homes or at a local cafe, whichever they prefer. I also work closely with an outpatient facility in Brentwood, so I have a lot of experience working with kids who have learning challenges, such as ADHD, and am very familiar with online schools. I work with students of all levels, but I’d say most of my students are at the high school level. I specialize in math and science.

As a company, I am most proud of the number of students I’ve served. Serving nearly 200 students to date has given me the ability to be such a flexible educator. I have worked with A+ students who need to get ahead, and I have worked with students who just need to get their GED. I have worked with many different learning styles, and I feel that I now have the ability to adapt my teaching style so that it works best for the student.

I would say my kind, personable nature sets me apart from others. I love being self-employed because it gives me the opportunity to get to know each and every one of my students and their families. I can treat my clients in a way that I think is fair, and I find that invaluable.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I am getting my real estate license and am excited to add that service to my repertoire so that I can continue to help my existing and future clients as needed. I will always continue to tutor though!
