Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicole (Nyckki) Cervantes.
Nicole, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I am 45 years old, married and a mother of two children. I have a 22-year-old son, a 4-year-old daughter and three babies in heaven. I am a retired social worker (CPS) for Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services. My book was birthed out of a series of unexpected tragic events. In 2012, my husband and I lost a child at seven months. At the time, I was working on my thesis, while on bed rest at the hospital. During a routine ultrasound one day, the doctor was unable to find movement or hear a heartbeat. Therefore, I went into an emergency C-section. Five hours later our baby died in my husband’s arms. Then, in 2015, I lost a set of twins after giving birth to our two-year-old daughter in 2014.
Those experiences were so devastating for us. I really had a difficult time processing it all. I was so depressed and anxious and seriously began to reflect on my life and its purpose. My husband and I prayed and made the decision to retire. It was one of the hardest decisions I had ever made, being that social work was my entire life. I have worked kids on a job since I was fourteen years old. In addition, I went to school for it and thought that was my career job.
Looking back now, I totally believe God had another plan for my life. My husband suggested that I start back writing. It was something I enjoyed many years ago. Actually, I had started working on a book almost 20 years ago! I took a plunge of faith and stepped out of my comfort zone. I prayed for wisdom and direction as to “ where the road was going”.
Shortly afterwards, God sent a publisher, and I was on my way to completing my first book. My book was published December 2017, and I have been publicly speaking since January 2018. I’ve spoken at high schools, non-profits (churches and other various organizations) and have been the keynote speaker for women’s conferences.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Yes, the road was and still is very challenging. I truly thought I was going to retire from LA County. My main goal after obtaining my masters in social work, was to accrue my clinical hours and become a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW). However, man makes plans, and God laughs! I feel like now, I’m getting my footing and actually enjoying the ride.
We’d love to hear more about what you do.
