Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicolas Ejchenbaun.
So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I was born and grew up in Buenos Aires, Argentina. My journey as a professional musician began in 2010 when I started studying simultaneously at Conservatory Manuel De Falla and Escuela de Música Contemporánea as a Composition and Drum Performance Major respectively. Coming up as a musician in Argentina afforded me a lot of opportunities as a drummer. I was lucky enough to perform major music festivals such as SONAR and Festival Pequenas Sessōes in Brazil. After some time touring, I decided to transfer my credits and continue my studies at Berklee College of Music (Boston, Massachusetts) pursuing a Degree in Electronic Production and Sound Design.
During my time in United States, I had the opportunity to share the stage with world re-known artists like: Justin Timberlake, Omar hakim (Maddona, David Bowie), Rachel Z (Peter Gabriel, Wayne shorter), Lenny Stallworth (Roy Hargroove), Dan Freeman (Brazilian Girls), Laura Escude (Electronic Creatives) and more.
I graduated from Berklee in 2019 with a degree in Electronic Production and Sound Design and have been working professionally in the Los Angeles music industry ever since, working on Netflix productions as an A/V Sync technician and with firms such as Electronic Creatives (Ariana Grande, Travis Scott) as a Playback Engineer/Ableton Tech.
All the while, I’ve been actively performing and producing, pursuing my own career as a musician and artist.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
That’s no fun! My biggest struggle has been balancing my life as a music industry professional with my life as an artist and performer, remembering to devote just as much time, energy and dedication to the success of my own projects as I do to the artists I service and collaborate with.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
Neekl is my solo project as an artist and producer. It’s the medium I let myself speak through, free from judgment. My music is for the fan of Radiohead, Flying Lotus, Bjork and all that jazz. When I’m making music, I’m really creating snapshots of different moments and phases of my life. I’m just letting my heart speak.
During my last semester at Berklee, I was selected to film a performance for the Electronic Digital Instrument Program, where I combined Electronic Drumming, Live looping and real-time processing as a demonstration of the application of the computer as not only an extension of other instruments but as an instrument in itself.
You can watch that performance via the Berklee YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i0Fc8QwQCg4.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Everything happens for a reason and I’m grateful for where I am right now, no regrets. Amen.
