Meet Nicola Foti of Soundlyawake in Sherman Oaks

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicola Foti.

Nicola, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started making YouTube videos in my small town in New Jersey in 2008, moved to LA in 2014, and now I make YouTube videos in a little bit of a larger town.

Has it been a smooth road?
It’s kind of like one of those mountain roads. You gotta make sure you’re cautious at the bends. Oh, and don’t look down, the railing is iffy.

There’s always a risk in creative work and working for yourself because if you fail, there’s only one person to blame. On the other hand, when you do something people really love, you get to take the credit. Also, the internet moves quickly, so being adaptable is definitely an asset not to be taken for granted. I’m really lucky to have some of the best friends anyone could ask for, so even on my worst day I’ve never felt alone.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I make videos that hopefully make people laugh at all of the oddly regular and regularly odd stuff we as humans do. I definitely got bullied when I was younger for being the weird gay kid, but it allowed me to cultivate a sense of humor that’s helped get me to where I am today. And I like laughing. I hope I foster a community that’s inclusive and one where everyone can relate to each other on some level.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Los Angeles is full of creative people. If you’re looking for a particular vibe, chances are you’re gonna find it somewhere in this city. For me, I get to live close to some of the best people I could’ve dreamed to meet, and we create things together all the time.
