Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicki Bove.
Nicki, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I grew up outside of Philadelphia and was inspired by music at a young age. By the age of nine, I was taking vocal, guitar and piano lessons, and by ten was already writing and recording my own songs. By 17 years old, I was awarded one of the top 10 young singers in the country by MTNA and got accepted to Berklee College of Music on a Vocal Scholarship. I had difficulty at first in Berklee just trying to transition from classical singing back to contemporary, but luckily I had wonderful teachers like Donna McElroy, Jeff Ramsey, Karen Carr, and Anne Peckham who guided me. I began working with a great producer, Dan Snyder and we recorded a library of material in less than a year. Soon after I started my first band at 19 with my best friend’s from Berklee and we got hired to play at Fairfield University in front of 2,000 people and open up for Girl Talk. It was our first show, but I knew after that moment that being on stage and performing my own music, was what I was meant to do. Upon graduating Berklee in 2010, I wrote and recorded my first EP, the “Green Light EP” in 2011 with my band. After the EP was out I moved out to Los Angeles from Boston to begin my life as an artist.
Life in LA wasn’t an easy ride by any means. I went to a lot of “meetings” that went nowhere, met with some “producers” who knew nothing, and it began to seem like getting paid for a show was considered a joke to most club promoters. I knew I had to build my brand over time, and it wasn’t going to happen overnight. I spent the next few years making connections, playing cover gigs, and working with as many different bands as I could.
As I began to solidify my connections and make a name for myself I decided to start teaching as my main source of work. I taught children and adults ages 7-60 and it really brought great joy to my life. I was able to teach piano, all styles of voice, stage techniques, music theory, and writing and production classes. I was teaching privately and also working as a voice teach for The Academy of Music for the Blind. Teaching and giving back to the community is what saved me and brought new life to LA for me. In a few years time I had over 12 students and was playing about 15 shows a month.
In 2017, I started Nicki Bove Music and now I have a highly rated booking agency, about ten students I still regularly teach, and I am playing about 25 shows a month all over Southern California. I finally stopped worrying about time and age and started focusing on my happiness and purpose. In about ten months I will be releasing my second EP, and I have never felt more alive.
Has it been a smooth road?
Not a smooth road by any means – More of a backroad with a lot of hairpin turns and potholes. Being so far from home was a difficult hurdle for me. I am an only child, and my family is everything to me. The second hardest struggle was trying to support myself in LA while pursuing music. I had to work in restaurants for over five years just to pay my bills, while still going out to shows at night to network.
Also, I struggled with depression and anxiety which lead to a writer’s block of almost six years. There’s so much pressure to release new material, but I was always so critical of everything. Teaching helped me overcome the anxieties and hardships I went through and encouraged me to work harder to get to where I wanted to be. It also forced me to ask myself what I would be happiest pursuing. All of those turns and holes is what paved my journey and I am grateful to where it has lead me so far, and I look forward to where it decides to lead me next.
