Meet Nick Watase

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nick Watase.

Nick is a multi-media creative located in Los Angeles, CA. He graduated two years ago from business school. His story started not with the goal of being an entrepreneur but more so with the goal of chasing a dream. For his whole life, he only knew football. That was his life for 12+ years. It was his passion. Injury took that all away in a blink of an eye. Football took him in and spit him out just like that. He had no direction, no goal for life, no passion to become something. He was just going through the motions of business school looking to become another college graduate. He graduated and jumped straight into a desk job. No inspiration to create nor create an entrepreneur route for himself.

With no prior experience of fashion nor attending a fashion school, he created a fashion brand named STTTR “stutter”. Creating a brand brought back the inspirational spark and motivation to accomplish a goal the same way football did. All the pieces he created were cut and sew pieces.

Without knowing how to create cut and sew pieces, he studied and shadowed each step of the process going from vendor to vendor learning and analyzing each step of the process. Through networking and meeting different vendors throughout LA, he was able to learn the clothes-making process.

That was just the beginning of his journey of becoming an entrepreneur in LA. Through networking, his manufacturer introduced him to his soon to be mentor, a multi-media artist Huzaifah (Shine) Haaris, founder of United Culture. Nick’s story is still going on but this was the beginning of how he started his brand and continues to run day to day operations.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been a smooth road. There have been many challenges creating a brand.

– Being Young in this industry (24), I have been taken advantage of by some vendors since I didn’t know what I was doing but I have learned.

– Networking has been a struggle because it is tough to put myself in the situation to promote my brand.

– Using my voice to even begin network has been a struggle.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
As a multi-media creative, I am a fashion designer, creative director, and multi-media artist.

He designs and makes sustainable cut and sew pieces, edits, records, and shoots commercials, photoshoots, and short films.

Also works on full production sets as a DP (director of photography), grip and electric, and camera op.

He specializes in the designing and manufacturing of cut and sew garments. Down from the picking of fabric to having the fabric sewn together.

What he is most proud of is making it to where he is today being a part of the Non Profit United Culture and building up his own brand STTTR.

Having the journey to this point so far has been what sets him apart from other creators in LA.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
LA is home, for 24 years of my life all I’ve known is LA. I love every part of LA. This is the Mecca of media. To be able to make it as a known clothing brand is the goal and will happen.
