Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicholas Moore.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Nicholas. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Growing up I was the kid in class with a notebook full of lyrics and drawings, and a distinct taste in wardrobe.
By high school, I’d DJ at events and design campus clothing as I majored in arts and business courses. Though I was artistic, I always knew the importance of business to help creativity thrive. So I went to Fashion Institute of Technology to help creativity thrive both personally and professionally.
I majored in Advertising and Marketing Communications which allowed me to move through each industry I had an interest in. My first internship was at an agency called Creative Chaos. My second was at the media company Complex Networks. At this point, I was near graduation in a Magazine Journalism class that had us create our own magazine from scratch. Full control, from nothing to something like starting a business.
I thought long and hard of the title (Pieces) and what it would be about. It focused on music, art, and fashion. The name really brought it together: musical piece, art piece, fashion piece. Folks at Complex loved it. However I fell short on the idea because I knew I didn’t want to speak on these subjects, I wanted to create them.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The road has been unclear at times, but in faith, it manages to show itself eventually. I still help creativity thrive personally and professionally. Whether I’m working in fashion for brands like Alexander Wang or Opening Ceremony, or fulfilling roles in the arts for institutions like The Metropolitan Museum of Art or Frieze.
In the midst of founding this company I am still part of a bigger mission that can call upon me in different ways, but always circles back to these forms of expression that we all care about.
Pieces – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Pieces is the interconnectivity of music, visual arts, and fashion. It is a haven for creators and consumers alike. We specialize in sound design, visual art/graphics, and fashion products. Currently, Pieces may be most known for its ongoing collections of jewelry, in which each collection has an original music project associated with it. It’s been my fun way of creating an experience and telling a linear story for my designs through music, which hasn’t quite been done before. If you search here https://g.co/kgs/PZw1Zx you’ll find my catalog.
Though I have this product range which also consists of fine art and clothing, I’ve positioned Pieces to be just as much a service as it is product. I’ve worked with upcoming designers like Gevandean to build a music project associated with his latest fashion collection. I’m also working with a womenswear designer to illustrate a portrait capturing them in their essence.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success is doing what you love and loving what you do. It’s a driver for many of our actions. If you can sustain that, whatever it is that you love, then to me you are successful.
